Sulphur nutrition and quality of oilseed rape

Field experiments were conducted at three locations in northern Germany differing with respect to soil characteristics, to evaluate the effect of fertiliser sulphur on oil, protein, sulphur and glucosinolate content in rapeseed. Treatments included four sulphate containing materials originating from different sources and three sources of elemental sulphur of varying grades and forms and a control receiving no sulphur. Results revealed that application of sulphur at 50 kg/ha S enhanced seed oil content between one to eight per cent depending on soil-crop environment. Marked response in this regard was noted in the seeds from Vollbuettel whre coarse textured soil had lowest level of native sulphur. However, no remarkable change in oil content was noticed at Braunschweig. Further, the magnitude of difference in oil content due to various sources was marginal. Sulphur supply led to increased yield of seed that resulted in higher oil-yield. Yield of crude protein from unit area based on seed-yield and but also its nitrogen content was higher from fertilised plots. Significant increase of S concentration in seeds was observed at Luebbersdorf and Braunschweig while at Vollbuettel it did increase but remained statistically non-significant. The total glucosinolate content was positively correlated to the plant sulphur status and varied from 2-18 umol/g of seed.
