Conclusion,Analysis of German data reveals that wild boars, raccoon dogs and red foxes arean important reservoir for maintenance of the sylvatic Trichinella cycle comprising T. spiralis, T. pseudospiralis and T. britovi . Due to this fact and considering that thebiomass of parasite may be high in host animals, wild boars intended for humanconsumption have to undergo a systematic meat inspection for Trichinella larvae.There is a risk that domestic animals kept outdoors may be exposed with Trichinella larvae due to scavenging of infected wild reservoir animals. For this reason,Germany cannot be considered as region with a negligible risk for Trichinella infection in fattening pigs.Studies should be extended by examination of more Trichinella isolates providedfrom the field to better understand the emergence of T. pseudospiralis which wasdetected for the first time in Germany in 2005. The unexpected finding of T. nativa ina red fox in Bavaria has to be clarified from the epidemiological point of view byfurther field studies in indicator animals in this region.
