Analyses of Regional Biogas Potentials in Turkey

To solve the fundamental energy security challenge in Turkey, it is important to enhance the share of energy production from domestic and renewable energy resources. Turkey aims to generate 30% of total electricity output from renewable resources by 2023. For that reason, the assessment of the potential of organic wastes that could be used at biogas plants to produce energy is one of the main tasks for sustainable socioeconomic development of the country. This study investigates the biogas potential which could be derived from agricultural residues, manure, agro-industrial waste, energy crops on fallow land and municipal solid waste in Turkey. Within the availability of the data, theoretical and technical biogas potentials of each province were analyzed based on different sectors. The results suggest that annually, biogas production has a potential to replace up to 221.5 PJ in total energy consumption. Konya was determined as the province with the highest biogas potential in Turkey. Presently unused biogas potential of the country could promote new employment areas; create a better environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and solving the disposal problem of waste; enable a sustainable energy production by replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy and; strengthen the economy by easing the energy import dependency.
