Compared to wood fuels the main insufficiency of foliage assortments for energetic utilization is their high ash content (up to 45 wt%, highly dependent on the foliage collection technique) and the increased mineral content. A promising approach to improve the foliage is mechanical leaching to remove disadvantageous elements according to a patented process (florafuel process) comprising the grinding of the wet biomass, washing and mechanical dewatering. A subsequent compaction enables utilization in automatically fed small scale boilers. Results indicate that formerly high concentrations of elements causing emission, corrosion and slagging problems could be reduced to a remarkable lower concentration. The ash content could be lowered and the net calorific value was increased. It can be concluded, that the process of mechanical leaching is a suitable way for upgrading foliage material to a highgrade biofuel applicable in small-scale combustion plants.
