Comparative gross and microscopic anatomy of the omasum of cattle (Bos indicus) and Philippine water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis)

Ruminants are a widespread and diverse group of mammals having a common feature of a specialized forestomach. One of the organs, from a morphophysiological standpoint, that plays a significant role in the digestion of ruminants, is the omasum. The study was conducted to compare the gross and microscopic anatomy of the omasum of cattle and Philippine (PH) water buffalo, both classified as cattle-type feeders or grazers. A total of 36 fresh omasa from 18 male cattle and 18 PH water buffalo, due for slaughter for human consumption were used in the study. The results of the study showed that there were few significant morphological differences which primarily involves the omasal weight, total number of laminae and papillae, and types of papillae present. The morphological differences observed between the omasum of cattle and PH water buffalo could be attributed to the difference in the intake of grasses. The results of the study could contribute into the existing literatures on the anatomy of omasum of cattle and buffaloes. Developing a good understanding of the ruminant digestive system anatomy and function, such as the omasum, would help in further understanding the proper nutrition and management of different ruminant species.
