The artificial floating islands are a system of phytoremediation of polluted waters similar to natural wetlands. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of the guinea grass "Panicum maximum" in the removal of TPH, in the Cutuchi River. For this reason, an island of 0.35 cm2 was installed in a 77 liter body of water (Treatment 1), three repetitions and one witness. The equations of the parameters removed, were every 21 days; as well as the development of the plant for four months. The percentage of removal was 80.76 of TPH (according to their results). The system of floating islands and the variety of guinea grass "Panicum maximum" is an alternative to improve water quality.

El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar el efecto de Panicum maximum en la remoción de TPH en aguas procedente del río Cutuchi. Para ello se instaló una isla flotante de 0,35m2 en un cuerpo de agua de 77litros (Tratamiento 1), tres repeticiones y un testigo. Las evaluaciones de los parámetros removidos fueron cada 21 días y cada siete días del desarrollo de la planta durante cuatro meses. El porcentajes de remoción fue: TPH de 80.04 %. El sistema con la variedad Panicum maximum constituye una alternativa para mejorar la calidad del agua.
