Analysis of genetic diversity using D2 in Indian Mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss.] genotypes for morphophysiological characters under heat stress condition

This study aimed to assess genetic diversity in Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss.] using Mahalanobis’s D2 statistical method. Eighteen genotypes, including a check, were evaluated in a Completely Randomized Block Design (CRBD) with three replications at the ICAR-Directorate of Rapeseed-Mustard Research during the rabi season 2020-21. The D2 analysis grouped these genotypes into six clusters. Cluster I had the highest number of genotypes (10), followed by Cluster V (3 genotypes) and Cluster II (2 genotypes), while Clusters III, IV and VI each had a single genotype. The greatest intra-cluster distance was 520.61 for Cluster V. The highest inter-cluster distance was observed between Cluster II and Cluster VI (3770.41), followed by Cluster II and Cluster III (2431.65), with the smallest inter-cluster distance between Cluster III and Cluster VI (587.93). Selecting diverse genotypes with desirable traits from these clusters for hybridization programme is expected to produce transgressive segregants.
