Compared with the other varieties of this form, ‘Lirepa’ and ‘Milkanova’ accumulated higher contents of WSC, however, they had higher NDF contents, which had a negative effect on DMD. Compared with the Lithuanian variety ‘Atoliai’, among the varieties of giganteum form slightly higher contents of WSC and better DMD were identified in the American variety ‘Regal’, however, it accumulated on average 53.9 mg 100 g-1 DM HCN. The other clover varieties of giganteum form tested differed in quality only insignificantly. The herbage of the first cut of all white clover varieties tested contained sufficient contents of CP (178-212 g kg-1DM) and were characterised by good DMD (787-875 g kg-1 DM), but some varieties accumulated high HCN contents. The variation of these compounds depended not only on the variety and ecotype but also on the cut: according to averaged data lower contents of HCN were accumulated in the herbage of the 1st cut (30.0 mg 100 g-1 SM), whereas the highest contents were identified the herbage of the 4th cut (42.4 mg 100 g-1 DM). Variation of HCN content was determined in separate individuals of the variety or ecotype: in the individuals of ‘Huia’ variety the contents of HCN varied from 13 to 89 mg 100 g-1 DM and only in 30 % of individuals tested HCN content did not exceed the allowable limit of 50 mg 100 g-1 DM. A high variation of this indicator was also identified in the individuals of the other ecotypes and varieties tested. Such variation of HCN content in separate individuals makes it possible to select the plants with low contents of noxious compounds from the varieties and wild ecotypes characterised by high yield and good feeding value and to include them in further breeding process.
