Proyecto de restauración de Corales masivos mediante microfragmentación en guarderías In Situ, Isla de San Andrés

Los ecosistemas marino-costeros enfrentan un deterioro acelerado debido a actividades antropogénicas, cambio climático y sobreexplotación de recursos. Los arrecifes de coral, considerados uno de los ecosistemas más biodiversos y productivos del mundo, son particularmente vulnerables, con una alarmante pérdida de cobertura de coral vivo y aumento de la cobertura algal. En respuesta, diversos proyectos de restauración coralina han surgido globalmente, incluyendo iniciativas en Colombia. En este contexto, el presente trabajo describe la participación en el proyecto "Un Arrecife de Vida", una iniciativa de restauración coralina en la isla de San Andrés, que busca incrementar la cobertura de coral vivo mediante microfragmentación, guarderías in situ y trasplante. Durante dos meses, se llevaron a cabo actividades de mantenimiento y recolección de datos en la guardería, con la meta de sembrar 6.000 microfragmentos de coral. A la fecha de inicio, se registraban 443 microfragmentos, evidenciando la necesidad de continuar con acciones de restauración para garantizar la recuperación del ecosistema coralino en la región.

Marine-coastal ecosystems are facing accelerated deterioration due to anthropogenic activities, climate change, and resource overexploitation. Coral reefs, considered one of the most biodiverse and productive ecosystems in the world, are particularly vulnerable, with an alarming loss of live coral cover and an increase in algal cover. In response, various coral restoration projects have emerged globally, including initiatives in Colombia. In this context, this study describes participation in the "A Reef for Life" project, a coral restoration initiative in San Andrés Island, aimed at increasing live coral cover through microfragmentation, in situ nurseries, and transplantation. Over two months, maintenance activities and data collection were carried out in the nursery, with the goal of planting 6,000 coral microfragments. At the start of the practice, 443 microfragments were recorded, highlighting the need to continue restoration actions to ensure the recovery of the coral ecosystem in the region.
