Alternativas de secado y almacenamiento de semilla de maíz (zea mays l.) y su efecto en la calidad

"La presente investigación fue realizada con el objetivo de identificar una alternativa de secado y almacenamiento mediante la evaluación de diferentes sistemas de acuerdo a la calidad fisiológica, física y sanitaria de semilla de maíz, así como determinar el tiempo de secado para cada método. El trabajo consistió en secar la semilla bajo los sistemas de secado artificial (SA), caseta de secado (CS), secado solar (SS) y el secado en el campo (AM). Estos cuatro tratamientos de secado dieron origen a siete tratamientos relacionados con el almacenamiento, de los cuales cuatro fueron envasados en sacos de polipropileno (AP) provenientes de los cuatro sistemas de secado (AP-SA, AP-CS, AP-SS y AP-AM) y los otros tres tratamientos permanecieron almacenados en las mismas condiciones en donde se dio el tratamiento de secado (A-CS, A-SS y A-AM). El presente estudio tuvo una duración de 120 días, monitoreando la calidad de la semilla en diferentes períodos. Los resultados indican que el menor tiempo de secado (dos días) fue bajo el sistema artificial, seguido por la caseta de secado y el secado solar; (26 y 33 días respectivamente) siendo el amonado el que tuvo mayor duración en el secado de 53 días. Los métodos de secado artificial, solar y caseta de secado resultaron ser adecuados, por no tener efecto en los componentes de calidad fisiológica en cuanto a germinación estándar, vigor mediante el envejecimiento acelerado y el peso seco de plántula. Los cuatros métodos de secado influyeron en la disminución de la humedad del grano lo cual se reflejó en el peso de mil semillas y peso volumétrico al inicio y final del secado, así también se determinó que los métodos de secado disminuyeron la incidencia de Fusarium spp, siendo muy leve esta disminución para el amonado. Los sistemas de almacenamiento más adecuados resultaron ser el AP-SA y AP-CS y A-CS; los dos primeros corresponden a tratamientos que se envasaron en sacos de polipropileno con semillas a granel provenientes de los sistemas de secado artificial y caseta de secado respectivamente y el último corresponde al almacenamiento en mazorcas en la caseta de secado (A-CS), puesto que no influyeron en los componentes de calidad fisiológica relacionados con la germinación estándar, el vigor mediante el envejecimiento acelerado y el primer conteo. A los 120 días fue más relevante el deterioro de calidad en los sistemas de almacenamiento en saco de polipropileno con semilla proveniente del campo (AP-AM) y la semilla que permaneció en el campo (A-AM). Se determinó que la caseta de secado es una alternativa de secado y almacenamiento en la producción de semillas de maíz"

"The objective of this research work was to identify an alternative for drying and storing maize seeds by the evaluation of different systems in relation to the physiological, physical and sanitary seed quality, as well as to determine the drying time for each method. The comparison of different drying systems included artificial drying (AD), drying shelter (DSh), solar drying (SD), and drying under field conditions (FD). These, combined with the storage methods after the drying process resulted in seven drying- storing treatments: Those for seed packaged in polypropylene bags (AD-PB, DSh-PB, SD-PB, and FD-PB) and three additional whose seed remained stored in the same conditions where the drying process ocurred (DSh- S, SD-S and FD-S). Soon after the drying procees and during a storage period of 120 days, the seed quality was assessed for germination, vigor, physical attributes and health condition. The results indicate that the shortest drying time (2 days) was under the artificial system, followed by the drying shelter, and the solar drying (26 and 33 days respectively) while the drying under field conditions required the longest period of time (53 days). The artificial drying, solar drying and drying shelter resulted adequate since they had not detrimental effects upon the physiological quality as for standard germination and vigor measured by accelerated aging technique, and seedling dry weight. These drying systems influenced the seed moisture content which was reflected in the thousand and volumetric seed weight at the initial and final seed quality assessment. It was also evident that the drying systems reduced the incidence of Fusarium spp, being the reduction very slight under field drying conditions. The most suitable storage systems were AD-PB, DSh-PB, and DSh-S. For the first two treatments the seed was packaged in polypropylene bags after artificial drying and shelter drying respectively. The last one refers to ear storage in the drying shelter (DSh-S), since they did not influence the components of physiological quality related to estandar germination and vigor as assessed in the accelerated aging test and first count in estandar germination. At 120 days the damage in seed quality was more relevant for the seed dried under field conditions and stored in polypropylene bags, as well as for seed which stayed in the field the whole period of time. It was concluded that the drying shelter was the most adecuate alternative for maize seed drying -storing in maize seed production for small farm conditions"
