Stocks of carbon in the forests of Georgia and emission of carbon dioxide from the surface of forest soils.

The investigations found that in the forests of Georgia's timber reserves make 266,1 Мт, and the total stock of carbon in it - 133,3 Мт. The total stock of phytomass (trunks, branches, crown (leaves), roots) in the forests of Georgia makes 353,9 Мт, accumating over 168,5 Мт. of carbon. The reserves of organis matter (humus) in soils of Georgia's forest make 297 tons / ha on avereage, containing 172 tons/ha of carbon. The maximum number of allocated reserves of humus in the yellow-brown soils of chestnut forests total 309 tons/ha, containing 180 tons/ha of carbon. As it turns out, the soil is the major reservoir of carbon storage in Georgia. The total reserve amount of phytomass and organic matter (humus) In Georgia's forest ecosystems amounted to 933 Mt, containing 504 Mt of carbon. The soils in almost all forest ecosystems of Georgia, except fir forest ecosystems, contain from 1,5 to 5,44 times more organic matter and from 1,4 to 4,67 times more carbon. Average emissionz of carbon from soils of forest ecosystems of Georgia range from 1.17 to 2.08 gC/m2/day. The average annual release of carbon dioxide varies between 14 and 27 tons per hectare. In the warm season (IV-X months) of the year 2-3 times more carbon dioxide is released against the cold seasons (XI-III months). The annual release of carbon dioxide from soils of all forest ecosystems of Georgia totals more than 9,47 Mt, releasing over 2,58 Mt in the cold period (XI-III months), and over 7,37 Mt in the warm season (IV-X months).
