A X-ray and gamma-ray computerized minitomography scanner system has been developed for applications to soil science. The system was based in a miniature X-ray tomography scanner dedicated to biomedical analysis presented by Cesareo et al. As it is a new methodology in instrumentation and in soil research, the minitomography has proved to be adequate for measuring water content and soil bulk density. The system features are translate and rotate scanning mode (1lst generation), 200mm effective field of view, NaI(Tl) detector, pulse counting method for signal processing and 1,0mm to spacial resolution. For instance the performance of the system is confirmed by measuring water content in a soil samples collected from the Ap horizon of a Barretos, Brazil, fine sandy loam soil.
