CITRUS AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO DEGRADED PASTURE FOR THE SOUTH OF ESPÍRITO SANTO STATE | CITROS COMO ALTERNATIVA À PASTAGEM DEGRADADA PARA O SUL DO ESTADO DO ESPÍRITO SANTO

English. The state of Espírito Santo has a significant amount of degraded pastures, especially in the Itapemirim River Basin. It represents a problem concerning the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere and its consequences on the greenhouse effect, due to the low capacity of the system to absorb and retain carbon. A strategy for the conservation of soil quality in the Itapemirim River Basin is the cultivation of orange trees, as it is a perennial crop widespread in the region and with a greater capacity to preserve or recover soil carbon concerning degraded pastures. The objective of this study is to present the potentialof the orange crop to replace degraded pastures in the south of the state of Espírito Santo, reducing the net loss of CO2 and promoting the sustainability of agriculture for the region. In a comparative study between native forests, citrus, rubber trees, and pasture, the citrus system had a greater potential for preserving or recovering the carbon and nitrogen in the soil than the pasture. This system also showed intermediate values between the pasture and native forests. The management between the lines with green manure or ecological mowing promotes a greater contribution of organic matter in the soil, favoring the increase of carbon in the soil and reducing the net losses of CO2 to the atmosphere. The cultivar Navelina showed potential to be used on the rootstock ‘Embrapa 264’ in the perception of farmers in the southern region of the state of Espírito Santo.

Portuguese. O Estado do Espírito Santo possui uma extensa área de pastagens degradas, sobretudo na Bacia do Rio Itapemirim. Isso representa um problema no que diz respeito à emissão de CO2 para a atmosfera e suas consequências no efeito estufa, devido à baixa capacidade do sistema em absorver e reter carbono. Uma estratégia para a conservação da qualidade do solo na Bacia do Rio Itapemirim é o cultivo de laranjeiras, por se tratar de uma cultura perene difundida na região e com maior capacidade para preservar ou recuperar o carbono do solo em relação às pastagens degradadas. O objetivo deste estudo é apresentar o potencial da cultura da laranjeira na substituição das pastagens degradas no Sul do Estado do Espírito Santo, para diminuir perda líquida de CO2 e promover a sustentabilidade da agricultura para a região. Em um estudo comparativo entre mata nativa, citros, seringueira e pastagem, verificou-se que, no sistema com citros, houve maior potencial para preservação ou recuperação do carbono e nitrogênio presentes no solo em relação à pastagem. Os sistemas com citros apresentaram valores intermediários entre as pastagens e a mata nativa. O manejo nas entrelinhas com adubos verdes ou roçada ecológica promove maior aporte de matéria orgânica no solo, que favorece o aumento de carbono no solo e reduz as perdas líquidas de CO2 para a atmosfera. Na percepção dos agricultores, a cultivar Navelina apresentou potencial para ser utilizada sobre o porta-enxerto ‘Embrapa 264’ para a região Sul do Estado do Espírito Santo.
