A perspective on the fruit situation in Panama | Una perspectiva de la situación de las frutas en Panamá

Fruits are a group of diverse plant species that, by their nature, are classified in the category that bears the same name; they are also an important aspect of today's society, due to their socioeconomic and cultural importance, as well as their contribution to good health and human nutrition. The purpose of this work is to provide a perspective on the situation of fruits in Panama, based on the analysis and interpretation of 26 publications related to the subject, at national and international level. The elements within the development of this study include a general overview of fruits, a list of the main 98 types of fruit plants grown and marketed in Panama, as well as the opportunities for sustainable development that fruit growing can provide. In conclusion, due to the great biodiversity of fruit trees present in Panama, they constitute an alternative for socioeconomic development, health and nutrition for the population on homeland.

Las frutas constituyen un conjunto de diversas especies vegetales que, por su naturaleza, son clasificadas en la categoría que lleva el mismo nombre; constituyendo además un aspecto importante dentro de la sociedad actual, por su importancia socioeconómica, cultural, así como su contribución en la buena salud y nutrición humana. El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo brindar una perspectiva sobre la situación de las frutas en Panamá, basado en el análisis e interpretación de 26 publicaciones relacionadas con la materia, a nivel nacional e internacional. Los elementos dentro del desarrollo del presente estudio incluyen un panorama general sobre las frutas, un listado de los principales 98 rubros de frutales cultivados y comercializados en Panamá, así como las oportunidades de desarrollo sostenible que la fruticultura puede brindar. En conclusión, debido a la gran biodiversidad de frutales presentes en Panamá, estos constituyen una alternativa de desarrollo socioeconómico, salud y nutrición para la población en suelo patrio.
