Economic Valuation of Rural Landscape Conservation Using Contingent Valuation Method - Focusing on Urban Resident of Seoul

The promotion of rural landscape policies has various objectives, such as increasing income, improving the environment, and preserving rural areas. Unlike cities, rural areas are often at risk of population outflow and disappearance due to lack of spatial planning, leading to sprawl and deterioration of settlement conditions. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the conservation value of rural landscapes using the contingent valuation method (CVM). As a result of the logit model analysis, the economic value of the Rural Landscape Conservation Fund was estimated to be about KRW 1,065.4 billion per year using the truncated average value (truncated average of WTP). This emphasizes the need for the fund to be established. In addition, the economic value was assessed and categorized by purpose as follows: KRW 441.2 billion (41.4%) for ‘preserving rural landscapes’, KRW 332.8 billion (31.3%) for ‘preserving rural vitality’, and KRW 291.4 billion (27.3%) for ‘providing recreational space’. The results of the survey are important evidence for the establishment of a comprehensive rural landscape plan for systematic and efficient land use in rural areas.
