Application and usefulness of grounded theory in spatial and interdisciplinary studies. the case of Peñaflor: The case of Peñaflor | Aplicación y utilidad de la teoría fundamentada en estudios espaciales e interdisciplinarios: el caso de Peñaflor

The application of theoretical models to understand human phenomena such as the urban-rural gap and formal education from a positivist or qualitative perspective has resulted in rigid and slow-growing bodies of knowledge that hardly cover the complexity of inhabited spaces. To generate a deep understanding, the present work includes the application of Grounded Theory in the study of the formation of educational expectations in high school students in the commune of Peñaflor, Chile, to understand the main factors that influence them. Through two cycles of interviews, one applied to teachers and directors of schools in the commune, and the other to national experts in the study of rural education, an iterative analysis of codes selected from the literature and emerging elements is carried out. The results of the study diverge from urban-rural generalizations, with the commune exhibiting an intermediate behavior both in spatial and educational characteristics that influence the formation of expectations in secondary students and are interrelated in that the characteristics of the commune delimit relevant pedagogical and family aspects. With this, it is postulated that the epistemological approach provided by Grounded Theory allows capturing the complexity of geographic space and the construction of interdisciplinary knowledge.

La aplicación de modelos teóricos para comprender los fenómenos humanos, como lo son la brecha urbano-rural y la educación formal desde el positivismo o lo cualitativo, ha resultado en cuerpos de conocimiento rígidos y de lento crecimiento que difícilmente abarcan la complejidad de los espacios habitados. A miras de generar un entendimiento profundo, el presente trabajo abarca la aplicación de la teoría fundamentada en el estudio de la formación de expectativas educacionales en estudiantes de nivel medio en la comuna de Peñaflor, región Metropolitana, Chile, con el objetivo de comprender los principales factores que las influencian. Mediante dos ciclos de entrevistas, uno aplicado a docentes y directivos de establecimientos de la comuna, y otro a expertos nacionales en el estudio de la educación rural, se realiza un análisis iterativo de códigos seleccionados desde la literatura y elementos emergentes. Los resultados del estudio divergen de las generalizaciones urbano-rurales y revelan en la comuna un comportamiento intermedio en términos de características espaciales y educativas. Este fenómeno influye en la formación de expectativas en los estudiantes de secundaria y se entrelaza con las características de la comuna, que a su vez delimitan aspectos pedagógicos y familiares significativos. Con esto, se postula que el acercamiento epistemológico que provee la teoría fundamentada permite captar la complejidad del espacio geográfico y de la construcción de conocimiento interdisciplinario.
