Status and diversity of butterfly and moth fauna at Dandumailaram I & II and Hafeezpur Urban Conservation Block Cluster in Ranga Reddy district, Telangana, India

The present survey was conducted in Dandumailaram I & II and Hafeezpur conservation blocks in Rangareddy district, Telangana, southern India, from January 2020 to November 2022 to facilitate the effective conservation and sustainable use of the biological resources at the behest of Telangana State Forest Department. During the study, among all the invertebrates, 92 species of Lepidoptera (70 butterflies and 22 moths) spread over 13 families were observed. The Nymphalidae dominates with 25 species, followed by the Pieridae (18 spp.), Erebidae (17 spp.) Lycaenidae (17 spp.), Papilionidae (6 spp.), and Hesperiidae (4 spp.). However, the Bombycidae, Crambidae, Geometridae, Noctuidae,and Uraniidae were represented with a single genus/species. Strategic conservation measures viz., conservation of habitat, larval host and nectar plants of native origin, and breeding in the butterfly conservatories have to be proposed simultaneously for the long-term sustainability of the important butterfly and moths fauna.
