The knowledge of distribution of crop residues help to formulate and implement renewable energy programme utilizing these resources. Currently agricultural crop residues are used as fuel in very inefficiently designed furnaces. Apart from low efficiency, very serious air pollution is caused from these furnaces. Adequate data on characteristics and statistics on availability of crop residues is essential to be used in efficient conversion devices. Availability of agricultural crop residues differs from region to region. Based on the residue production ratios, the production of different agricultural crop residues has been worked out. It has been observed that about 61% of the total crop residues produced in our country are from straws. Remaining 39% includes sugarcane (23%), stalk (11 %), and husks cobs etc (5%).
