Between territories and traditions: Migration and identity of the indigenous inhabitants of Pahuatlan, Puebla | Entre territorios y tradiciones: migración e identidad de los pobladores indígenas de Pahuatlán, Puebla

English. Objectives: To describe the processes of the migratory phenomenon, as well as the practices of strengthening cultural identity among the indigenous inhabitants of the Municipality of Pahuatlán, Puebla. Methodology: Ethnographic research was conducted through semi-structured interviews, informal direct talks with family members and migrants from the communities of San Pablito and Xolotla. Results: The networks built by the indigenous migrants of the region have contributed to establish communities in different cities of the country and abroad; likewise, several traditional practices were found that migrants replicate or support inside and outside their communities, which directly impacts the strengthening of the cultural identity of the migrant settlers. Limitations: Within the methodology there were some interviews that were conducted in video calls with different applications, where the connectivity (signal) was not very good and at certain times the calls were cut off, which complicated the collection of information. Conclusions: The cultural expressions that migrants reproduce outside their communities support the strengthening of cultural identity and rootedness to their territory; likewise, when migrants return to their communities, they obtain social recognition among the population and can position themselves in different spaces of power and decision making within their communities.

Objetivos: describir los procesos del fenómeno migratorios, así como las prácticas de fortalecimiento de la identidad cultural entre los pobladores indígenas del Municipio de Pahuatlán, Puebla. Metodología: se realizó una investigación etnográfica a través de la realización de entrevistas semi estructuradas, charlas informales directas con familiares y personas migrantes de las comunidades de San Pablito y Xolotla. Resultados: las redes que han tendido los migrantes indígenas de la región han contribuido a establecer comunidades en diferentes ciudades del país y en el extranjero, así mismo se encontraron diversas prácticas tradicionales que los migrantes replican o apoyan dentro y fuera de sus comunidades lo que impacta directamente al fortalecimiento de la identidad cultural de los pobladores migrantes. Limitaciones: dentro de la metodología existieron algunas entrevistas que se realizaron en vídeo llamada con diferentes aplicaciones, en donde la conectividad (señal) no era muy buena y a determinado tiempo se cortaban las llamadas, lo cual complicó la recopilación de la información. Conclusiones: las expresiones culturales que los migrantes reproducen afuera de sus comunidades apoyan al fortalecimiento de la identidad cultural y arraigo a su territorio, así mismo los migrantes al retornar a sus comunidades obtienen un reconocimiento social entre la población y se logran colocar en diferentes espacios de poder y decisión dentro de sus comunidades.
