The aim of this study was to examine the spatial pattern similarities in organic matter in sediment composition with visible near infrared spectroscopy vs. pyrolysis measured by Tolu et al. (2017), specifically terrestrial lignin and aquatic chlorophyll. Samples initially taken by Bindler et al. (2001), were biogeochemically analysed by Tolu et al. (2017), then analysed with a Foss XDS Rapid Content Analyzer for the purpose of this study. A principal component analysis and a factor analysis were performed on the visible near infrared data. Maps visualising the result where subsequently made in ArcGIS Pro. The maps show a tie between the results of visible near infrared spectroscopy and the results presented in Tolu et al. (2017). Principal components show a correlation to both organic matter as well as its components through a factor analysis and a visual comparison. Visible near infrared spectroscopy can be a viable method of identifying organic matter in sediment. It can also be used as a complementary method to biogeochemical analysis or as a pre-selection tool to identify sample point worthy of further study.
