As a qualifying food waste producer under the New York State’s Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling Law, after January 1st, 2022 excess edible food waste must be donated, and remaining food scraps must be recycled when located within 25 miles of an organic’s recycler1. After food has been donated for human consumption, there are multiple options for the recycling of remaining scraps including animal feed, anaerobic digestion, composting, and land application. This fact sheet will outline the benefits and considerations to each option for organics recycling along with prior steps to implement before recycling.
