Evaluation of Structural Features of Some Roof Gardens in Ankara

For an increase in green areas in metropolitan cities whose population increases each day and thus, which urbanize rapidly, like Ankara, construction of roof gardens receives more and more importance day by day. In order to popularize roof gardens in cities, those which are to be newly constructed should be designed by concerning the types of roof gardens while the imperfections of those which are already present should be enhanced. Accordingly, by bringing up the present situations and by identifying the shortcomings of six of the existing roof gardens in Ankara (Ankamall Shopping Center-Yenimahalle, Platin Beytepe-Çankaya, Next Level Shopping Center-Çankaya), this study aims to develop suggestions for improving roof gardens in Ankara. The study relies on literature review and face to face interviews with roof garden designers, as well as on evaluation of the present situation of the roof gardens within the frame of the form which was developed by experts (designers). Consequently, the study reveals that construction of more roof gardens by considering the criteria that were set for evaluating the existing roof gardens in Ankara would aesthetically, functionally and socially contribute to the city.
