Religião e política na Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus: um debate sobre o contexto pós eleições de 2022 | Religion and politics in the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God: a debate on the post-2022 election context

Este artigo analisa o posicionamento político da Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (IURD) após as eleições presidenciais do ano de 2022. Nosso interesse pela pesquisa se justifica pelo fato da IURD ser uma instituição que se utiliza do pragmatismo como balizador para a formação de alianças políticas. Como fator inédito, a agremiação foi consistente apoiadora de Jair Bolsonaro, mesmo quando as pesquisas eleitorais apontavam a vitória de Lula e do Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT). Por se tratar de uma instituição que preza pela boa relação com dirigentes do Governo Federal, este estudo é pautado na indagação acerca do alinhamento político da IURD, visto sua incisiva campanha promovida contra o governo Lula (PT) no pleito eleitoral. O principal material empírico desta análise é o jornal Folha Universal, ferramenta de evangelização e informativo semanal da IURD. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa que ambiciona capturar a abordagem do periódico nas manifestações bolsonaristas contrárias aos resultados eleitorais como os protestos em frente aos quartéis militares, o ato no feriado de Proclamação da República, a posse presidencial e as manifestações inconstitucionais em Brasília. Embora Bolsonaro não tenha sido eleito, os resultados eleitorais foram favoráveis para aeleição de diversos políticos ligados à IURD. Os resultados demonstram que o conteúdo do jornal indica, de um lado, a necessidade de se respeitar o resultado eleitoral e, de outro, a continuidade das críticas à Lula e ao PT.

This article analyzes the political positioning of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) following the 2022 presidential elections. Our interest in this research stems from the UCKG’s use of pragmatism as the central rule for granting political alliances. Notably, the UCKG consistently supported Jair Bolsonaro, even when electoral polls indicated a victory for Lula and the Workers' Party (WP). Given the UCKG’s commitment to maintaining good relations with federal government leaders, this study questions the church's political alignment, especially considering its vehement campaign against Lula's government (WP) during the election. The primary empirical material for this analysis is the newspaper Folha Universal, the UCKG’s weekly evangelization and informational tool. This is a qualitative study that aims to capture the newspaper's approach in pro-Bolsonaro manifestations against the election results, such as protests in front of military barracks, the act on the Proclamation of the Republic holiday, the presidential inauguration, and unconstitutional demonstrations in Brasília. Although Bolsonaro was not elected, the election results favored the election of several politicians associated with the UCKG. The findings reveal that the newspaper's content simultaneously emphasizes the need to respect the electoral outcome and continues to criticize Lula and the WP.
