Capturing the value of fisheries using photovoice

The photo voice pilot study was used to explore how men and women viewed their participation in fisheries, the benefits, challenges and how they engaged in decision making. We selected a coastal community with a marine managed area of about 230 people in for the photo voice pilot study. Only 6 participants were part of the study (3 men & 3 women). This was due to the number of cameras we had available. The results showed that men and women fish mostly closed to the shore which is most accessible. Benefits from fishing include providing income for families and also for food and nutrition. The main challenge to fishing include sharks tearing their fishing lines especially at the FADs (Fish aggregating device) as dominant. Contributions to decision making in the community involves both the individual and the community as a whole.
