Control of strawberry wilt disease by methane fermentation and digestion solution

Methane fermentation is one of the ways to utilize biomass to renewable energy, and the emitted methane gas in this process is assumed to be as valuable natural gas. However, while methane gas is emitted, a large amount of methane fermentation digestate (MFD) is also emitted, its waste treatment cost is expensive. On the other hand, MFD contains fertilizer nutrients and can be used as liquid fertilizer. Furthermore, it also contains a wide variety of microorganisms and has been reported to suppress plant disease. In a previous study, strong inhibitory effects were observed in all seven food-derived MFD that showed suppressive effect on against soil-borne pathogens. However, it is needed to improve its handling for easier application. In this study, pathogen suppression rates were measured when MFD was adsorbed to artificial pumice stone (APS) and applied to soil. The MFD used were of food origin; different storage term and facility location were used to clarify the shelf life and reproducibility of the MFD. To determine appropriate application rate of MFD absorbed APS was mixed 1%, 7.5%, and 15% to the soil (w/w %). As a result, a high suppression effect was confirmed even with MFD from different storage term and facility sites compared to the test soil alone. It was also confirmed that effective application rate from 1%, with no significant difference even at 15%. In order to clarify which fungi in the MFD were responsible for the inhibition, isolation of the fungi and confrontation culture test of the isolates were conducted. Isolation of the bacteria was performed multiple times by dividing the amount of nutrients on the medium. Results showed that 13 species of fungi were isolated from MFD, and three of them were effective in suppressing strawberry wilt.
