Direct sowing of onion (Allium cepa) over cover crops with different lengths of the chemical fallow | Siembra directa de cebolla (Allium cepa) sobre coberturas vegetales con diferentes largos de barbecho químico

English. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of cover crops and fallow duration on the onion crop planted in direct sowing in trials carried out for three years. In the year 2013, two field trials were carried out in two sites. Two cover crops (oats and millet) and one uncovered control were evaluated at three planting dates. The studied variables were crop establishment and dry matter of the cover. In the field trials performed in 2014 and 2015 the effect of the length of the chemical fallow of oats on the establishment of onion was evaluated. The effect of the duration of the chemical fallow of oats was also evaluated in laboratory in 2015 in Petri dishes. In 2013, the greatest establishment was obtained in the treatments without cover in both sites. In 2014 the greater the duration was of the chemical fallow of the cover, the greater the onion establishment. In the field trial in 2015, no effects of fallow duration on crop establishment were observed, a result attributable to the intense rainfall recorded. In the laboratory, germination was higher in treatments with longer fallow periods. Based on the results, evidence was obtained of the negative effect of the cover crops in the establishment of the onion crop. These effects were inversely related to the duration of chemical fallow and may be attributable to allelopathic effects.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de los cultivos de cobertura y la duración del barbecho en el cultivo de cebolla instalado en siembra directa en ensayos llevados a cabo durante tres años. En el año 2013, se realizaron dos ensayos de campo en dos sitios. Se evaluaron dos cultivos de cobertura (avena y moha) y un control sin cobertura en tres fechas de siembra. Las variables estudiadas fueron la implantación del cultivo y la materia seca de la cobertura. En los ensayos de campo realizados en 2014 y 2015, se evaluó el efecto de la longitud del barbecho químico de la avena en la implantación de la cebolla. El efecto de la duración del barbecho químico de la avena también se evaluó en el laboratorio en 2015 en placas de Petri. En 2013, el mayor establecimiento se obtuvo en los tratamientos sin cobertura en ambos sitios. En 2014, cuanto mayor fue la duración del barbecho químico de la cobertura, mayor fue la implantación de la cebolla. En la prueba de campo en 2015, no se observaron efectos de la duración del barbecho en la implantación del cultivo, un resultado atribuible a la intensa lluvia registrada. En el laboratorio, la germinación fue mayor en tratamientos con períodos de barbecho más largos. Con base en los resultados, se obtuvo evidencia del efecto negativo de los cultivos de cobertura en la implantación del cultivo de cebolla. Estos efectos estaban inversamente relacionados con la duración del barbecho químico y pueden atribuirse a efectos alelopáticos.
