The protection of the biodiversity in the Republic of North Macedonia takes place through an established legal framework in the form of the Law of live stock, which regulates biodiversity in livestock that includes indigenous breeds like the Busha cattle breed, Karkachanen, Ovchepolian, and Sharplannian sheep strains, the Balkan goat breed, the domestic buffalo, domestic horse, domestic donkey, and the Sharplaninec shepherd dog. Stemming from this law are the Programs for protection of the biodiversity in livestock 20112017 and 2018 2024 which include phenotypic characterization of the inventory of indigenous breeds, their in situ and ex situ conservation and monitoring. Unfortunately, part of the indigenous species/breeds in the Republic of North Macedonia are extinct, as is the case with the buffalo, Sharplaninian sheep, Karakachnfen sheep, while all the others, with the exception of the stable Ovchepolian sheep, Macedonian honey bee, and Sharplannian shepherd dog, are endangered. So far, there’s a sperm bank for the Busha cattle breed, as well as Ovchepolian and Karakachanen sheep and Balkan goat featuring deposed biomaterial with the goal of genetic characterization of the breeds.
