Donkeys are a unique animal species in many ways. Although were domesti cated before horses and played an indispensable part in the history of human society, donkeys were brought to the brink of extinction, especially in the deve loped European countries. As a symbol of poverty, they have been pushed to the margins of interest of animal breeders, biologists, veterinarians and researc hers. It is simply unbelievable that at the moment when science achieved break through to molecular level and the genes of many animal species and humans were mapped; effective techniques and tests for diagnosing of almost all known diseases were discovered, the anatomical and physiological characteristics of donkeys were still discussed. The donkey had been regarded as a small hor se for far too long, and that prejudice affected the way we approached their diagnostics and therapy. It turned out that this is not the case. Donkeys suffer from diseases that are characteristical for horses but also from donkey specific diseases. So, some donkey diseases are caused by pathogens characteristically affecting only this species and they are manifested by clinical symptoms typical only for donkeys and diagnosed by tests specifically designed for diagnostic in donkeys. The approach to treatment is also different the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of many drugs in donkeys differ from other species, which means that the dosage and the method of administration, therapeutic effects of certain drugs and side effects also differ.
