Abstract The present research involves the design of a municipal solid waste treatment plant for the urban area of Momostenango, Totonicapán. The production of waste and solid waste generated by each inhabitant of the urban area was calculated, resulting in 0.42 kilograms of waste per day. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources states that the average per capita production in Guatemala is 0.45 kilograms per inhabitant per day, meaning that Momostenango remains below this value. In the waste and solid waste generated in the urban area, organic material predominates at 59.06%, recoverable material accounts for 14.93%, non-recoverable material makes up 25.97%, and inert material represents 0.04%. This is the result of weighing the three strata: residential, municipal market, and public roads, carried out during the months of July and August of the year 2022. The treatment phases are derived from the characterization of the waste and solid waste, outlined as follows: classification of solid waste, collection and transportation, recovery of inorganic waste, composting chambers, maturation yard, leachate stabilization pond, and sanitary landfill for final disposal. Based on the above, it was determined that it is important to take advantage of organic materials for compost production. Additionally, the importance of inorganic materials for recycling, reuse, and trade to generate municipal income was emphasized. It is important to implement awareness programs, regulations, or environmental policies for the environmental improvement of the municipality.
