The study compared local and foreign rice consumption expenditure amongst rural households in Rivers State, Nigeria. Specifically, the quantity and consumption expenditure of local and foreign rice in the study area were estimated. A simple random sampling method was adopted in the selection of 100 households. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression models were the analytical tools used. The result indicated that monthly household expenditure on local rice and foreign rice consumption was ₦4,258.80 and ₦3,905.60 respectively, and significantly different. About 58% of the households preferred the consumption of local rice. Age, price of local rice, and income were positively signed and significant at 1 %, 1%, and 5% levels respectively. However, household size and price of foreign rice were positively signed at 1% while the number of children per household was significant at 5% but negatively significant. Affordable product prices and high swelling capacity were reasons for households’ preference for local rice while well-polished products and the absence of dirt were reasons for households’ preference for foreign rice products while low consumer income contributed to the low purchase of foreign rice. Poorly processed local rice products discouraged local rice consumption. Farmers should improve the quality of local rice.
