Fertility of agricultural soils close to native forest fragments | Fertilidade de solos agrícolas próximo a fragmentos florestais nativos

English. The government strategy to increase native forest coverage has frequently been to punish land owners that do not abide the environmental legislation. The advantages of the forest presence in agricultural areas are rarely discussed, as is the soil fertilizing potential of close forests. The influence of edge forest in the soil fertility in agricultural areas was verified in five forest fragments of Londrina - State of Paraná. The soil of the area is originated from basaltic rocks, presenting differences in agreement with the intensity of the weathering. The Latossolo Vermelho Distroférrico (oxissol) presenting on the weathered palteaus, Nitossolo Vermelho Distroférrico (ultissol) on the hillsides and small pockets of Neossolo Litólico (entissol) on the most hilly sites. The soil fertility was evaluated, through its components, organic matter (OM), pH, potential acidity, Ca, Mg, K and P, in 5 m intervals to the distance of 50m of the edge forest towards the agricultural area. The organic matter content was higher until 10m from the forest edge, what is a demonstration of the positive effect of forests to the agriculture. Large forest fragments showed larger influence in the amount of nutrients than smaller fragments.

Portuguese. A estratégia implementada pelo governo para aumentar a cobertura florestal tem sido a punição dos proprietários que não seguem a legislação ambiental. As vantagens da presença de floresta em áreas agrícolas são raramente discutidas, como é o potencial que a floresta possui de fertilizar o solo ao seu redor. A influência da borda florestal na fertilidade do solo em áreas agrícolas foi verificada em cinco fragmentos florestais da região de Londrina - Paraná. O solo da região é originado de rochas basálticas, apresentando diferenças de acordo com a intensidade do intemperismo. O Latossolo Vermelho Distroférrico está presente no planalto intemperizado, o Nitossolo Vermelho Distroférrico nas vertentes e pequena porção de Neossolo Litólico nos locais mais elevados. Foi avaliada a fertilidade do solo, através de seus componentes; matéria orgânica (MO), pH, acidez potencial, Ca, Mg, K e P, em intervalos de 5m até a distância de 50m da borda florestal em direção à área agrícola. O conteúdo de matéria orgânica foi maior até 10 m de distância da borda florestal, o que demonstra o efeito positivo de florestas na agricultura. Fragmentos florestais maiores mostraram maior influência na quantidade de nutrientes do que fragmentos menores.
