English. This work is the first of a series of demographic studies on Astrocaryum mexicanum that has been in development since 1975. It describes the structure of the populations of A. mexicanum, as well as the arboreal floristic composition of six permanent observation sites of 600 m2, located in the high evergreen forest of the Los Tuxtlas Tropical Biology Station in the State of Veracruz, Mexico. For the populations of A. mexicanum, the distribution of heights, crown radii and number of living leaves are analyzed, establishing the structural relationships between the sites. Regarding the height distribution (since we have found a direct relationship between height and age), four of the sites have a "normal" distribution of ages, while the other two show alterations, probably due to differential survivals. of certain age classes. For the plant communities of the sites, the composition was analyzed in terms of individuals with d.a.p. >= 3.3cm. To establish the floristic relationships between the sites, a principal component analysis was used, which shows us structural differences between sites that are very similar, in terms of the total density of A. mexicanum. The structural characteristics of the sites are also compared with those of other high evergreen forests in the world, finding that this forest has structural characteristics (such as basal areas and densities) very similar to those.

Spanish; Castilian. Este trabajo es el inicial de una serie de estudios demográficos sobre Astrocaryum mexicanum que se encuentra en desarrollo desde 1975. En él se describe la estructura de las poblaciones de A. mexicanum, así como la composición florística arbórea de seis sitios permanentes de observación de 600 m2, situados en la selva alta perennifolia de la Estación de Biología Tropical Los Tuxtlas en el Estado de Veracruz, México. Para las poblaciones de A. mexicanum se analizan la distribución de alturas, radios de copa y número de hojas vivas, estableciéndose las relaciones estructurales entre los sitios. En lo que se refiere a la distribución de alturas (dado que hemos encontrado una relación directa entre altura y edad), cuatro de los sitios tienen una distribución "normal" de edades, mientras que los otros dos muestran alteraciones, probablemente debidas a sobrevivencias diferenciales de ciertas clases de edad. Para las comunidades vegetales de los sitios se analizó la composición en cuanto a los individuos con d.a.p. >= 3.3 cm. Para establecer las relaciones florísticas entre los sitios se usó un análisis de componente principal, que nos muestra diferencias estructurales entre sitios que son muy semejantes, en cuanto a la densidad total de A. mexicanum. También se comparan las características estructurales de los sitios con las de otras selvas altas perennifolias del mundo, encontrándose que esta selva tiene características estructurales (como son áreas basales y densidades) muy similares a aquéllas.
