Drought during the terminal phase of the crop is a global limitation for the production of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and it is a problem that will be aggravated by the effects of climate change. The objective of this work was to select morphological indicators for hydric stress response in P. vulgaris in greenhouse. Four lines of brown grain and the commercial cultivar ‘BAT-93’ were evaluated. A water stress treatment was established where the irrigation was suspended in the pre-flowering stage until the harvest and a control with irrigation throughout the all crop cycle. Ten plants were random selected at each treatment and the angle of the basal roots, main root length (cm), the number of legumes/plant, the number of grains/legumes and the weight of 100 grains (g) were evaluated. Root length was a morphological indicator of the plants response to water stress under these conditions. It allowed to differentiate the response of the lines and cultivar ‘BAT-93’. The rest of the variables evaluated did not show significant differences between treatments. Root length is proposed as a morphological indicator of the response to water stress in the greenhouse that can be used in genetic improvement programs in P. vulgaris.Keywords: common beans, drought, grains, legumes, root

La sequía durante la fase terminal del cultivo es una limitante mundial para la producción de frijol común (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) y es un problema que se agravará por los efectos del cambio climático. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue seleccionar indicadores morfológicos de la respuesta al estrés hídrico en P. vulgaris en casa de cultivo. Se evaluaron cuatro líneas de grano marrón y el cultivar comercial ‘BAT-93’. Se estableció un tratamiento con estrés hídrico donde suspendió el riego en la etapa de prefloración hasta la cosecha y un control con riego durante todo el ciclo del cultivo. Se seleccionaron diez plantas al azar en cada tratamiento donde se evaluó el ángulo de las raíces basales, la ongitud de la raíz principal (cm), el número de legumbres/planta, el número de granos/legumbre y el peso de 100 granos (g). La longitud de la raíz fue un indicador morfológico de la respuesta al estrés hídrico de las plantas en estas condiciones. Permitió diferenciar la respuesta de las líneas y el cultivar ‘BAT-93’. El resto de las variables evaluadas no mostraron diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos. Se propone la longitud de la raíz como un indicador morfológico de la respuesta a estrés hídrico en casa de cultivo que puede ser utilizado en los programas de mejoramiento genético en P. vulgaris.Palabras clave: frijol común, granos, legumbres, raíz, sequía
