The presence of arsenic in irrigation water and its accumulation in agricultural soil increases in areas with intensive farming and negatively affects the health and economy of the producers. Plants absorb arsenic in the form of arsenate and can translocate it to the seeds; thus, we can find arsenate in the flour of species like wheat (Triticum durum). The plant cellular mechanisms do not differentiate phosphorous from arsenic due to the similarity between them; this generates metabolic disorders that restrict the plant development and its physiological performance from its first phenological stages, and can even limit the productive plot establishment. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological modifications and antioxidant components due to arsenate in wheat seedlings. We hypothesized that the response depends on the concentration of arsenate and the tolerance of the varieties. In the Bárcenas and Cortázar varieties seedlings, we evaluated concentrations of arsenate (100, 200, 500, and 700 mg L?1 ) and distilled water, using a randomized complete block experimental design. We considered each variety as a block and the treatments corresponded to the block combinations with the concentrations of arsenate and the control, with five repetitions per germination test. The Bárcenas seedlings were the most vigorous and presented the highest antioxidant activity, and with high concentrations of arsenate they synthesize greater concentrations of proline and phenolic compounds. With this variety, it could be possible to obtain tolerant lines that allow the cultivation of wheat plants in high concentrations of arsenic

El arsénico en el agua de riego y su acumulación en el suelo agrícola se incrementa en zonas con agricultura intensiva e impacta negativamente en la salud humana y la economía de los productores. Las plantas absorben el arsénico en forma de arseniato y pueden translocarlo a las semillas, por lo que el arseniato en especies como el trigo (Triticum durum) puede mantenerse en la harina. Los mecanismos celulares no discriminan el fósforo del arsénico por la similitud entre ellos. Esto genera afectaciones metabólicas que restringen el desarrollo de las plantas y su desempeño fisiológico desde las primeras etapas fenológicas, y puede incluso limitar el establecimiento de parcelas productivas. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar las modificaciones fisiológicas y los componentes antioxidantes causadas por arseniato en plántulas de trigo. La hipótesis fue que las respuestas dependen de la concentración del arseniato y de la tolerancia de las variedades. En plántulas de las variedades Bárcenas y Cortázar se evaluaron las concentraciones de arseniato 100, 200, 500 y 700 mg L?1 y agua destilada, y el diseño experimental fue de bloques completos al azar. Cada variedad se consideró un bloque y los tratamientos correspondieron a las combinaciones de los bloques con las concentraciones de arseniato y el testigo, y con cinco repeticiones de cada prueba de germinación. Las plántulas de Bárcenas fueron las más vigorosas y con actividad antioxidante mayor, y en concentraciones altas de arseniato sintetizan mayor concentración de prolina y compuestos fenólicos. Con esta variedad se podrían obtener líneas tolerantes que permitan el cultivo de plantas de trigo en concentraciones altas de arsénico.
