Effects of sulfosate on weed suppression, cocoa pod set, and yield of cocoa and coffee

Sulfosate, a post-emergence, non-selective and translocated herbicide, was evaluated at hree sites in Ghana for the control of weeds in 2-year-old clonal Robusta coffee and 5-year-old juvenile cocoa plantations. Sulfosate was applied at reduced rates of 480, 720, and 960 g ai in 100 l ha-1 of water or at the conventional rate of 1920 g ai in 300 l ha-1 of water over 3 years. Glyphosate at 540 g ai in 100 l ha-1 of water and manual weeding were used as the controls. The effects of the treatments on insect pollination of cocoa and the residual activity of sulfosate in the soil were also studied. The application of sulfosate effectively controlled most grass and broadleaved weeds at the three sites. There were no significant differences between the efficacies of the reduced rates of sulfosate and the conventional rate of 1920 g ai ha-1. There were also no significant yield differences in coffee between the various treatments. However, the application of all rates of sulfosate resulted in higher cocoa yields than in the manual weeding treatment. The application of sulfosate had no adverse effects on insect pollinators of cocoa. The growth of young cocoa seedlings was not adversely affected when sulfosate was applied to the soil. These results indicate that sulfosate, at reduced rates of 480 to 960 g ai in 100 l ha-1, could be used to effectively manage weeds in cocoa and coffee plantations without adverse effects on the crops, insect pollinators, or the soil..
