English. Sugarcane monoculture with pre-harvest burningis a common practice in sugarcane-growing countries causingenvironmental degradation. In this regard, an investigationwas carried out for 27 years, with the objective of defining thebehavior of C content and balance in a sugarcane agro-ecosystemwhere burning is applied to harvesting. A long-term N leveltrial was conducted under unirrigated conditions, with fourplanting cycles and 24 harvests. An eutric typical Red Ferraliticsoil was used. Soil samples (0.00-0.30 m) were taken from eachplot before planting and after some harvestings, besidesdetermining its organic matter through Walkley & Black´smethod. Soil organic C variation in time was fitted by means ofCorg= a+bt1/2 equation. The total C input quantity per treatmentwas calculated according to the whole amount of above-groundbiomass expressed in dry matter and C %. The entire C emittedto the atmosphere was estimated by taking into account soilorganic C output and C emitted by dry leaf burning effect. Thefinal C balance in the agro-ecosystem was calculated by addingto the total C released to the atmosphere the one that wasexported with stalks from the field and subtracting the resultingannual C captured per treatment. Soil organic C decreased,even without applying mineral fertilizers (2.05 to 1.43 %). Theapplied N had no effect on soil organic C decrement. The total Clost from sugarcane agro-ecosystem, considering the oneexported by stalks, was similar to that captured by the above-groundbiomass; therefore, net balance tended to zero. As C fixed bysugarcane roots and stubble was not considered to estimateC balance, the net balance was positive towards the capture.In spite of the fact that soil fertility proved to be injured, theatmosphere was not contaminated by C concentrationincrement.

Spanish; Castilian. El monocultivo con caña de azúcar y uso de laquema para la cosecha es una práctica común en los paísescañeros, que ocasiona la degradación ambiental. Sobre estabase se realizó una investigación durante 27 años, con el objetivode definir el comportamiento del contenido y balance del C enun agroecosistema cañero donde se practica la quema para lacosecha. Se condujo un experimento de niveles de N de largaduración en condiciones de secano, con cuatro ciclos de plantacióny 24 cosechas. Se empleó un suelo Ferralítico Rojo típico éutrico.Antes de la plantación y después de algunas cosechas, setomaron muestras de suelo (0.00-0.30 m) en cada parcela y seles determinó la materia orgánica por el método de Walkley yBlack. La variación del C orgánico del suelo en el tiempo semodeló mediante la ecuación Corg= a+bt1/2. La cantidad de Ccapturado anualmente por tratamiento se calculó sobre la basede la cantidad total de biomasa aérea expresada en base seca y% C en la biomasa. La estimación del C total liberado a laatmósfera se realizó considerando la pérdida de C orgánico delsuelo y el emitido por efecto de la quema de hojas secas. Elbalance final del C en el agroecosistema se calculó sumándoleal total emitido a la atmósfera el que se exportó del campo conlos tallos y restando el resultado del C capturado anualmentepor tratamiento. El C orgánico del suelo disminuyó aún sinaplicar fertilizantes minerales (2.05 a 1.43 %). No se encontróefecto del N aplicado sobre la disminución del C orgánico delsuelo. El C total perdido del agroecosistema cañero, considerandoel exportado por los tallos, resultó similar al capturado por labiomasa aérea, por lo que el balance neto tendió a cero. Comoque en la estimación no se tuvo en cuenta el C fijado por lasraíces y la cepa de la caña de azúcar, puede pensarse que elbalance neto fue positivo hacia la captura. No obstante, sedemostró que si bien no se manifestó contaminación atmosféricapor el incremento de la concentración de C, sí se deterioró lafertilidad del suelo.
