The intensive rice growth system reduces seed amount for sowing, increases plant yields and saves irrigation water | EL SISTEMA INTENSIVO DE CULTIVO DEL ARROZ (SICA) DISMINUYE LA CANTIDAD DE SEMILLAS PARA LA SIEMBRA, AUMENTA LOS RENDIMIENTOS AGRÍCOLAS Y AHORRA EL AGUA DE RIEGO

The work was developed at Los Palacios RiceResearch Station for three years and later at small-scaleproducers´ areas belonging to a non-specialized system(popular rice) as an agricultural extension. The study consistedof determining the effect of seedling age, plant spacing andseedling number per site on agricultural yield. Results showeda seed amount reduction in the nursery, to the value of 5 kg.ha-1.year-1,which represent between 35 and 40 % of that used in thetraditional transplanting system. In addition, agricultural yieldsincreased up to 2.0 t.ha-1; there was a greater tillering and rootsystem development per plant compared to the check control.On the other hand, when crop irrigation was discontinued for21 days, 3 300 m³.ha-1.year-1 of water were saved.

El trabajo se desarrolló durante tres años en laEstación Experimental del Arroz Los Palacios y, posteriormente,en pequeña escala como extensión agrícola en las áreas de losproductores pertenecientes al sistema no especializado (arrozpopular). El estudio consistió en determinar el efecto de laedad de la postura, distancia de plantación y cantidad de posturaspor sitio sobre el rendimiento agrícola. Los resultados demostraronuna reducción en la cantidad de semillas a utilizar en elsemillero, para un valor de 5 kg.ha-1en una campaña, representandoentre el 35 y 40 % de la que se utiliza en el sistema tradicionalde transplante. Además, se lograron incrementos del rendimientoagrícola de hasta 2.0 t.ha-1; se observó un mayorahijamiento y desarrollo del sistema radical por planta respectoal testigo. Asimismo, la suspensión del riego al cultivo por 21 díaspermitió ahorrar 3 300 m³.ha-1 de agua por campaña.
