Progress on the anti-corrosion performance of electrodes for capacitive deionization technology

Capacitive deionization (CDI), as an emerging desalination technology, has shown great potential for application in the field of water treatment due to its features of low cost, low energy consumption and no secondary pollution. However, electrode corrosion has become a major challenge restricting the practical application of CDI technology. To address this problem, the corrosion mechanisms of different types of electrode materials were described in detail, the effects of changes in operating parameters and electrolyte properties on the corrosion of CDI electrode were illustrated, and the potential hazards of corrosion on material performance and service life, as well as the challenges of CDI in highly corrosive environments, were discussed. In addition, strategies to mitigate the corrosion of CDI electrode were summarized in terms of the design of device configuration, modification of electrode materials, and optimization of operating parameters. Finally, possible research directions for corrosion resistance of CDI technology were discussed. In the future, the development of electrode materials with superior corrosion resistance and the continuous improvement of device configurations and optimization of operating parameters would promote the corrosion resistance of CDI system electrodes and broaden the application of CDI in water treatment.
