Fires in northwestern Patagonia: their relationship with meteorological conditions and anthropic pressure over a 20 years period | Los incendios en el noroeste de la Patagonia: su relación con las condiciones meteorológicas y la presión antrópica a lo largo de 20 años

Spanish; Castilian. Los incendios resultan de una compleja interacción entre condiciones ambientales y fuentes de ignición. El manejo de recursos naturales requiere del conocimiento de las respuestas del fuego a variaciones ambientales locales como las condiciones meteorológicas. Estudiamos las relaciones entre precipitación, temperatura y número de incendios, y áreas quemadas en la Patagonia noroccidental, para el período 1984-2004, en dos zonas separadas por la isohieta de 1200 mm de precipitación media anual. Comparamos también datos de incendios en el departamento de Bariloche con estadísticas de la provincia de Río Negro, Patagonia y el resto del país, y con los recursos asignados para la lucha contra los mismos. En el Bosque, el área quemada se asoció con la precipitación acumulada en los meses lluviosos y en los meses secos, y más débilmente con la temperatura. En la Estepa, el área quemada se asoció con la precipitación de los meses secos y moderadamente con la temperatura. El número de incendios presentó escasa asociación con las variables meteorológicas y con el área quemada. El 81% de los incendios registrados en Patagonia ocurren en la provincia de Río Negro, la mitad de ellos en Bariloche, mostrando una tendencia creciente. El 85% del área quemada en Patagonia pertenece a Río Negro, del cual el 0.3% corresponde a Bariloche. La relación entre el número de incendios y el área afectada sugiere que su combate ha sido efectivo, excepto en temporadas con un déficit extremo de precipitación y altas temperaturas. En temporadas de inviernos y veranos secos pueden esperarse grandes superficies quemadas en el Bosque y serán suficientes veranos secos para que esto suceda en la Estepa. Las únicas dos temporadas de grandes incendios registradas estuvieron relacionadas con eventos La Niña. La tendencia del cambio climático global hace prever un incremento de la amplitud y frecuencia del fenómeno ENSO y, consecuentemente, el riesgo de grandes y severos incendios.Fires are the result of a complex interaction between meteorological and environmental conditions, and ignition sources. A careful knowledge of response to local environmental variables is necessary to deal with fires and to define adequate natural resource management policies. The goal of this study was to find relationships between precipitation, temperature, and number and size of fires, in northwestern Patagonia during the 1984-2004 period, in steppe and forest environments, which are separated by the 1200 mm isohiet of mean annual precipitation. We also analyzed the relationship between local, regional and national statistics, and the available resources for fire combat. In the forest, the burned area was associated with autumn-winter and spring-summer cumulative precipitation, and less with temperature. In the steppe, the burned area was associated with spring-summer cumulative precipitation and moderately with temperature. The number of fires showed a poor relationship to the meteorological variables and the burned area. An eighty-one percent of fires recorded in Patagonia happened in Rio Negro province, and of these, 50% where registered in the departament of Bariloche, showing a tendency to increase. An eighty-five percent of the burned area in Patagonia occurred in Rio Negro province, and only 0.3% of that area in Bariloche. The relationship between the number of fires and the burned area suggests that the combat tasks were effective except during seasons with extreme precipitation deficit and high temperatures. During dry winters or summers we can expect extensive burned areas in forest environments, and a summer with low precipitation will be enough for this to happen in the steppe. We have registered only two fire seasons with large burned areas, and both were related to a La Niña phenomena. The global change tendency will increase the frequency and amplitude of ENSO phenomena and, consequently, the risk of severe and extensive fires.
