Sistematización de información de especies sucedáneas de flora y fauna en ecosistemas terrestres de Chile | Systematization of information on surrogate species of flora and fauna in terrestrial ecosystems of Chile

Las especies sucedáneas desempeñan un rol importante, reconociéndose como una herramienta ecológica a nivel de comunidad y su uso radica en la suposición de que evaluar parcialmente los elementos de un sistema natural y aplicar programas de manejo basados en estas especies, permiten conservar todo o gran parte del ecosistema en el que habitan. Las cuatro clasificaciones más reconocidas y consensuadas que se desglosan de las especies sucedáneas son las especies claves, paraguas, indicadoras y banderas. En este estudio se sistematizó la información sobre estas especies de flora y fauna vertebrada en los ecosistemas terrestres de Chile y documentar las más estudiadas en fichas descriptivas. Para lograr este objetivo, se emplearon dos enfoques principales: la búsqueda bibliográfica mediante el uso de códigos booleanos en plataformas científicas para encontrar textos indexados, y la consulta experta realizada a miembros de sociedades científicas y organizaciones no-gubernamentales a lo largo de todo el país. Posteriormente, se calificó cada mención según la calidad de la información para generar una escala de importancia de las especies sucedáneas. Se identificaron 87 especies sucedáneas, de las cuales se crearon fichas completas para 40 de ellas, las cuales contienen los motivos para ser especie sucedánea (paraguas, clave, indicadora, bandera), su estado de conservación, la distribución geográfica de la especie, características anatómicas relevantes, la región vegetacional que habita preferentemente y una breve característica anatómica de cada especie sucedánea. Los animales representaron la mayoría de las especies, con un total de 51, lo que equivale aproximadamente al 58,6%. Se documentaron 36 especies de plantas, que corresponden al 41.4%. En cuanto al número de menciones de especies sucedáneas, se registraron 154 menciones en la búsqueda bibliográfica y la consulta experta. De estas menciones, 71 corresponden a especies indicadoras (46,1%), 43 a especies bandera (27,9%), 21 a especies paraguas (13,6%) y finalmente 19 a especies claves (12,3%). La especie con el mayor número de menciones en este estudio es el Carpintero negro (Campephilus magellanicus), seguido por el Puma (Puma concolor). El presente trabajo corresponde al primer sustento para la creación de un catálogo actualizado de las especies sucedáneas que compila su distribución espacial en diversas regiones vegetales de Chile.

Surrogate species play an important role, recognized as an ecological tool at the community level, with their use based on the assumption that partially assessing elements of a natural system and applying management programs based on these species allows the conservation of most or all of the ecosystem. The four most recognized and agreed-upon classifications stemming from surrogate species are keystone, umbrella, indicator, and flagship species. This study aimed to systematize information on these flora and vertebrate fauna species in terrestrial ecosystems in Chile and document the most studied ones in descriptive fact sheets. To achieve this goal, two main approaches were employed: bibliographic searches using boolean codes on scientific platforms to find indexed texts and expert consultation with members of scientific societies and non-governmental organizations throughout the country. Subsequently, each mention was assessed based on the quality of the information to create a scale of the importance of substitute species. Eighty-seven surrogate species were identified, with complete fact sheets created for 40 of them. These profiles include reasons for being a surrogate species (umbrella, keystone, indicator, flagship), their conservation status, geographical distribution, relevant anatomical features, the preferential vegetational region they inhabit, and a brief anatomical characteristic of each surrogate species. Animals represented the majority of the species, totaling 51, which is approximately 58.6%. Thirty-six plant species were documented, accounting for 41.4%. Regarding the number of mentions of substitute species, 154 citations were recorded in the bibliographic search and expert consultation. Of these mentions, 71 corresponded to indicator species (46.1%), 43 to flagship species (27.9%), 21 to umbrella species (13.6%), and finally, 19 to keystone species (12.3%). The species with the highest number of mentions in this study is the Magellanic Woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus), followed by the Puma (Puma concolor). This report will support the creation of an updated catalog of substitute species, compiling their spatial distribution in various vegetal regions of Chile.
