This paper introduces "Ecotoxicology Research Assistant GPT" (ERA), a custom AI assistant designed specifically for scientific work in ecotoxicology field. The research details the development and testing of this specialized chatbot created within the ChatGPT interface to support the complete ecotoxicology research lifecycle—from brainstorming research topics to publication assistance. We have configured ERA with safeguards to minimize hallucinations and fabricated information, requiring it to gather user background information to provide contextually appropriate guidance. The model was tested through practical conversations, demonstrating its ability to suggest relevant research topics, provide accurate literature references, design experimental methodologies, and assist with grant applications. While ERA showed promising results with minimal errors during testing, the authors emphasize that such AI tools should serve as assistants rather than replacements for human judgment in scientific research.
