Effects of Temperature on Functional Response of Aphidius colemani Viererck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), A Parasitoid of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

In this study, we evaluated the functional response of Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a parasitoid of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), at different temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30℃) and varying aphid densities (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 individuals per leaf). At all temperature treatments, A. colemani exhibited a Type III functional response. The attack rate was high at 30°C (0.0043 day-1), but the handling time (0.9268 day) was longer compared to other temperatures. The estimated handling times decreased as the temperature increased from 15℃ to 25℃. The maximum attack rates of A. colemani over 24 hours were 29.1, 31.9, 59.3, and 25.9 at 15, 20, 25, and 30℃, respectively. The parasitism rates of M. persicae under different temperature treatments showed similar characteristics. The highest parasitism rates were observed at aphid densities of 32, 32, 16, and 32 individuals for 15, 20, 25, and 30℃, with values of 0.52, 0.54, 0.57, and 0.40, respectively; the parasitism efficiency of A. colemani was highest at 25℃. This study evaluates the efficiency of A. colemani as a biological control agent for M. persicae under various temperature conditions.
