During growth, central venous, right ventricular, pulmonary arterial, Pulmonary capillary wedge, and systemic arterial pressures, heart rate, and cardiac Output were repeatedly measured in 41 Friesian calves, considered as having conventional muscular conformation, and in 19 Belgian White and Blue double-muscled calves. A total of 123 and 70 recordings were collected in conventional and double-muscled calves, respectively. These circulatory indices were calculated: stroke volume, cardiac and stroke indices, pulmonary and systemic pulse pressures, pulmonary and systemic vascular resistance indices, and right and left ventricular work indices. Results indicated that systemic arterial and pulse pressures, as well as cardiac output, stroke volume, cardiac and stroke indices, and right and left ventricular work indices were significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05 to 0.001) lower but, in contrast, pulmonary and systemic vascular resistance indices were significantly (P less than or equal to 0.001) higher in double-muscled than in conventional calves. Right-sided vascular pressures and heart rate were similar in the 2 groups. These results indicated that global cardiac performance may be considerably poorer in double-muscled calves. Diminished cardiac performance of double-muscled calves appears to be related neither to relative bradycardia nor to reduced ventricular preload. The potential role of increased ventricular afterload or of reduced myocardial contractility in double-muscled cattle should be determined by direct measurements.

A study was conducted to investigate whether aspiration of amniotic fluid is associated with a deleterious effect on absorption of colostral immunoglobulins or on blood gas and acid-base values of healthy newborn calves. Fourteen calves purchased from commercial sources were transported to a research facility immediately after birth and fed colostrum with known concentrations of immunoglobulins. Blood samples for gas analyses were collected within 5 hours of birth, 24 hours later, and prior to euthanasia. Between 3 and 5 days of age, calves were euthanatized by an overdose of barbiturates. Eleven calves had evidence of bronchoaspiration of amniotic fluid, as determined by presence of meconium, squamous epithelium, or keratin in histologic sections of fixed lung or by cytologic analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Blood gas tensions and pH were within reference ranges in 11 of 14 calves. Aspiration of amniotic fluid could not be linked to any specific changes in blood gas tensions, acid-base status, or absorption of colostral immunoglobulins. Presence of keratin and meconium in the lungs often was accompanied by mild exudative alveolitis and focal atelectasis. It was concluded that aspiration of small amounts of amniotic fluid with or without meconium is common in calves and is not associated with hypoxemia, respiratory acidosis, or failure of passive transfer.

The metabolic responses of equine articular cartilage to incubation with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were studied, using explant cultures of articular cartilage obtained from the metatarsophalangeal joints of 15 horses, age of which ranged from 3 months to 20 years. For comparison, explants were also established from the metatarsophalangeal joints of 3 calves. Explants were cultured for 3 days in medium containing various concentrations of LPS from 0 (control) to 100 microgram/ml. Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) released during the 3-day incubation was determined by a spectrophotometric assay, using the dye 1,9-dimethylmethylene blue. Newly synthesized GAG content was assayed by measuring [35S]sulfate incorporation during a 3-hour pulse labeling period. In addition, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) synthesis was quantified, using a [3H]PGE2 radioimmunoassay kit and magnetic separation. Finally, explants from 3 animals were used to evaluate the effect of supplementing culture medium with 5% serum on the response of explants to LPS, and explants from 1 horse were used to compare responses to stimulation with LPS derived from 2 bacterial sources. Equine explants cultured with bacterial LPS had a dose-dependent decrease in synthesis and increase in release of GAG, and these responses were significantly (P < 0.0001) greater in explants from younger horses. In addition, equine explants had a significant (P = 0.0001) dose-dependent increase in concentration of PGE2 released into the culture medium in response to incubation with LPS. Comparison of data for GAG synthesis from equine and bovine explants revealed a significant (P = 0.025) difference in responsiveness to LPS between the 2 species. Equine explants tended to have a greater suppression of GAG synthesis in response to incubation with increasing concentrations of LPS than did age-corrected bovine samples.

Holding power was determined for various orthopedic screws in bones of calves. Holding power was defined as maximal tensile force required to remove a screw divided by thickness of bone engaged by the screw (kN/mm). Comparative pull-out tests were performed, using pairs of large metacarpal or metatarsal bones from calves aged 3 to 14 days. Comparisons were made of the holding power of 6.5-mm fully threaded cancellous screws and 5.5-mm cortical screws in the proximal and distal metaphyses, and of 4.5-mm and 5.5-mm cortical screws in the diaphysis. Sixteen repetitions of each comparative trial were performed. There was no statistically significant difference in the holding power of 4.5- and 5.5-mm cortical screws in the diaphysis. There was no significant difference in the holding power of 5.5-mm cortical and 6.5-mm fully threaded cancellous screws in the proximal metaphysis. In the distal metaphysis, 6.5-nu-n fully threaded cancellous screws had significantly (P < 0.001) greater holding power than did 5.5-mm cortical screws. There was no significant difference between the mean holding power of 5.5-mm cortical screws in the proximal metaphysis and 5.5-mm cortical screws in the distal metaphysis. There was significantly (P < 0.01) greater mean holding power of 6.5-mm cortical, fully threaded cancellous screws in the distal metaphysis, compared with the proximal metaphysis.

The umbilical stalk, vein, and arteries, urachal region, and urinary bladder of 9 healthy Holstein calves were scanned ultrasonographically at weekly intervals from 1 day to 3 weeks of age. Four additional calves of representative ages, 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks. and 3 weeks were euthanatized after ultrasonographic evaluation of the umbilical structures. Umbilical structures from these 4 calves were dissected, photographed, and examined histologically to ensure normalcy. These gross specimens were correlated with the ultrasonographic images and compared with serial ultrasonograms of 9 calves. The ultrasonographic scanning technique and the appearance of normal umbilical stalk, arteries, and vein, and urachus in calves were different from those described for foals. The umbilical vein of calves was scanned from the umbilical stalk to the liver along the right abdominal wall. Two veins, which merged within the body wall, were identified within the stalk. Umbilical arteries were not found within the umbilical stalk; they ended abruptly near the apex of the urinary bladder. A urachal remnant was not identified in any of the calves. A range of normal values for measurement of the umbilical stalk, umbilical arteries, and umbilical vein at 3 sites was determined. The described ultrasonographic appearance and measurements of the normal Holstein calf umbilicus may be used as a reference for evaluation of calves with internal umbilical abnormalities.

Intrareticularly placed sustained-release selenium boluses were administered to 1 group of selenium-deficient heifer calves (n = 16), and a second group (n = 16) was left as nontreated controls. Age range for all calves was 83 to 156 days. These boluses release 3 mg of selenium each day, as sodium selenite. Measurements of blood selenium concentration, plasma copper concentration, hepatic copper concentration, and body weight were made over a 188-day day study. The treated group of calves had significantly higher mean blood selenium concentration at posttreatment days 68 (P < .0001), 112 (P < 0.0001), and 188 (P < 0.005) than did the control group. Mean blood selenium concentration in the treated calves was > 0.10 micrograms/ml for 188 days. These boluses were observed to be clinically safe; signs of selenium toxicosis were not detected and untoward effects were not seen in the selenium-treated calves. There were no differences between control and treatment groups with respect to mean hepatic copper concentration or mean plasma copper concentration. There were no observed differences between the control and treatment groups with respect to weight gain during the study.

A total of 21 calves were inoculated IV with 1 of the following isolates of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV); CD87 (n = 10), NY-1 (n = 3), NADL (n = 5), or were sham-inoculated with virus-free medium (n = 3). Subsequent to inoculation, platelet counts were monitored to detect differences between noncytopathic (CD87, NY-1) and cytopathic (NADL) isolates in their ability to induce thrombocytopenia. Platelet count decrease throughout infection was statistically analyzed by comparing the slope of the line drawn from the count on the day of infection to the lowest count achieved by that calf. Significant difference was observed in the CD87-inoculated calves and in the NY-1-inoculated calves, compared with those of the same control group. Significant difference was not observed in the slope of platelet count decrease between the cytopathic NADL-infected calves and control-group calves. The data indicate that noncytopathic BVDV isolates may more easily induce thrombocytopenia than do cytopathic isolates in immune-naive, immunocompetent calves; acute infection with 1 cytopathic BVDV isolate (NADL) did not induce thrombocytopenia. In addition, although each calf seroconverted, virus was rarely isolated from mononuclear cells obtained from calves with cytopathic infections. At some point after infection, virus was always isolated from each of the calves undergoing noncytopathic infections, and occasionally, transient association of noncytopathic BVDV antigen with platelets was observed during these infections.
