Silhouette differences among cats do not suggest a general selection for paedomorphosis
2013
Pares-Casanova, P.M., University of Lleida, 25198 Lleida, Spain
Paedomorphosis is the retention of juvenile morphology at maturity and is important in generating evolutionary change in domestic species and species in the wild. This preliminary study compared morphological characteristics of seven domestic cat pure breeds and felid species from around the world. An original procedure based on elliptical Fourier (EF) methods was applied to head lateral views of specimens and were assessed in order to analyse head profile. For comparative purposes three domestic kittens of different ages and three species of genus Lynx were also used. EF descriptors, allowed for the quantification of the head profile. Using the Fourier transform, reconstruction of the mean head profile revealed that there was a general shape difference between wild cats, domestic cats and kittens. Results suggested that variability in head profile differentiate quite well between adult cats and kittens, but domestic and wild cats appeared grouped into a similar cluster. The similarity between breeds can thus be attributed more to the general head profile than to flatness, i.e. to the general conformation rather than facial profile. Therefore, no effect of paedomorphism on the studied breeds can be undertaken. The present approach opens interesting ethnological perspectives for the aloidic characterisation for domestic breeds.

We examined morphological growth variations in skull features between the Kuril harbor seal and the spotted seal in Hokkaido, Japan. Skulls from 80 Kuril harbor seals and 41 spotted seals were collected, and we measured 29 metric and 6 non-metric cranial characteristics. Three growth classes were defined according to the postnatal developmental stage: pups (0 year), subadults (1-4 years old) and adults (more than 5 years old). We detected sexual dimorphism in Kuril harbor seal pups, subadults, and adults. Although interspecies differences were detected in each growth class, Kuril harbor seals were larger and more massive than spotted seals; this feature was already detectable in pups. We did not detect certain cranial characteristics with which to identify the two species, but it was possible to identify any unknown specimens to their species, sex, and growth class using the cranial data generated in this study. Using 6 non-metric cranial characteristics, we identified significant interspecies differences with regard to the shape of the temporozygomatic suture and the extent of the nasal-incisive suture; the shape of the temporozygomatic suture and the shape of the nares were indicators of growth class in Kuril harbor seals. Although non-metric cranial characteristics have a lower discriminating power than metric characteristics, they are easy to use in the field even by inexperienced researchers.

Histologic sections were stained with Hematoxylin and eosin, picrosirius and Mallory’s trichrome methods and examined under light microscopy. In fetus with 11 cm of length showed deep mucosa, wide folds and villi lined by single cylindrical epithelium, lamina propria, submucosa, muscular sublayers and serosa. Fetus with 13.5 cm, villi were evident and muscular layer of the mucosa was formed. At 16.5 cm, could be seen an increase in mucosa glands size and number. In fetus of 26 cm, showed gastric mucous glands at great number and ramifications. At 29 cm large folds, were observed. At 37 cm, showed glandular epithelium, muscular layer of the mucosa and muscular layer well development. Fetus with 42 cm, showed deep glands with corresponding mucous cells surrounding by thin lamina propria. It was concluded that the histomorphometric values of muscular layer and total abomasum wall were increased for all groups except for groups 4 and 5 which there was a decline of values, without presenting a significant difference and there was no continuous pattern of growth for other components of abomasum wall.</span><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <p class="Default">The morphological evolution of the epididymal duct of guinea pigs (<em>Cavia porcellus</em>, L.) was studied on 10, 20, 30, 45, 60, 70, 90 and 100 days of age, being complex, which is due to the proper differentiation postnatal in the epididymal epithelium. Thus, it was observed that the initial segment of the epididymis reveals an increase of epithelial height corresponding to the average height of the main tubular epithelium cells, generally progressive after 45 days of age. The epithelial height in the middle segment were higher in younger stages (10 to 45 days) than in the prepubertal age (60 days), and have a decrease among 70 to 100 days of age. The ductular terminal segment starts a gradual decrease of the epithelial heights from puberal age (70 days), until adult age (90 to 100 days). In addition, this segment showed epithelial waviness that disappeared after 70 days of age, when the lumen fills it with sperm and cellular exfoliation. The cell types of the epididymal tubular epithelium, principal cells, basal cells and apical cells, were observed in all ages. In the epididymis of very young animals, there was a predominance of undifferentiated columnar cells. After 20 days of age, there was natural prevalence of the principal cells on other cell types, what is a feature similar to other mammals.</p> | <p class="Default">A evolução morfológica do ducto epididimário de cobaio (<em>Cavia porcellus, L.</em>) foi avaliada nas faixas etárias de 10, 20, 30, 45,60, 70, 90 e 100 dias após o nascimento, mostrando-se complexa, o que é decorrente da própria diferenciação pós-natal do epitélio epididimário.

| The aim of this study was to identify morphological patterns and malignancy criteria of the TVT in cytopathological and histopathological evaluations and relate these characteristics to clinical evolution and response to chemotherapy. Regarding studied animals, sixteen dogs were female and four were male. The age of the animals ranged between one and ten years old. Considering breed, 80% of the dogs were mongrel dogs and 20% were of other breeds. It was found that the cytological samples allowed a better characterization of the cell type than histological ones. The plasmacytoid was the most common morphological type of TVT, followed by the lymphocytoid and mixed standards. There was no difference among the scores for the malignancy criteria and morphological types of TVT. Regarding response to chemotherapy, no morphological type of the TVT showed any difference, but the TVT presents morphological peculiarities that may interfere with tumor behavior, especially those related to increased aggressiveness and that are observed in the plasmacytoid TVT.

The intimal layer of the thoracic and abdominal aortic segments of Cebus apella monkey presented an evident inner elastic lamina. The medial layer of the thoracic aorta segment showed a basic lamellar elastic pattern having a medium average of 23.12 lamellae per analyzed cut sections, which appeared disposed circular and oblique relatively to the aortic lumen. The aortic adventitial layer, at this level, was formed mainly by collagen fibers, irregularly disposed between elastic fibers and smooth muscle cells. The aortic abdominal portion, in this monkey, at the suprarenal level presented a medium number of 19.12 elastic lamellae which showed a relatively disorganized and broken up pattern. At the infrarenal level the aortic medium layer showed a medium average of 11.75 elastic lamellae and next to the emission of the internal iliac arteries it was found only a middle average of 8.37 elastic lamellae intermingled with smooth muscle cells and collagen fibers whose concentration seemed to be increased next to the adventitial layer. The external elastic lamina was only present in the more distal aortic segment near to the emission of the internal iliac arteries.

| The aim of this study was to evaluate the incident and clinical, morphological and immunological aspects of canine T-cell lymphomas. From 71 canine lymphomas, 38 were classified by immunohistochemistry as T-cell lymphomas. According to the Working Formulation and Kiel classification, 18 were classified as intermediate-grade, 15 as high-grade and 5 as low-grade. The pattern of lymphomatous proliferation was diffuse in all 38 animals. T-cell lymphoma was more common in defined breeds (24/38), such as Boxers, English Cockers and Rottweilers. The occurrence of T-cell lymphoma in males (21/38) was greater than in females and the median age was 5.8 years (1 to 13 years). For the anatomical classification and the clinical staging of T-cell lymphomas, the most common were multicentric form (29/38) and stage IV (15/38) and III (14/38), respectively.

This study was conduct using 20 turtles specie Trachemys scripta elegans, which 2 young females, 4 adults females, 8 young males and 6 adults males. Initially, it was took the hoof belly and, isolating the heart to identify more precisely the arteries was injected latex solution with red pigment through aorta descendens with one thin tube before aorta's bifurcation. After the latex injection, all the animals were submerged in 20% formaldeid water solution by a period of more than 72 hours. After that period, the arteries responsible by spleen irrigation were dissected. It was found in 30% of the cases the spleen was positioned behind colon transversum; and in 70% in front of colon transversum. Regarding the spleen irrigation, it was observed in 100% of the cases that arteria lienalis had its origin in arteria mesenterica cranialis. Which 30% had irrigation only by arteria lienalis. In 40% the irrigation was done by arteria lienalis and small branches of arteria colica sinistra. In 5% of the cases it was irrigated by arteria lienalis and by na unique branch sent by one of arteriae jejunales. In 5% of the cases the irrigation through arteria lienalis and by one branch of arteria pancreaticaduodenalis cranialis, and also by one artery with origin in the common trunk from arteriae jejunales. In 15% from the animals, irrigation was done by arteria lienalis and by branches from arteria pancreaticaduodenalis cranialis. In 5% of the cases the spleen was irrigated just by ramifications of arteria colica sinistra.
