A survey on the prevalence of internal parasites in the laboratory rats in the Chonnam and Kyonggi areas was carried out. A total of 208 rats was selected for necropsy and the parasites were collected from the organs and the fecal samples. The infection rate of the internal parasites was high as 63.9 % and eight species of parasites were identified. Among the species identified A tetraptera (21.6 %) and H diminuta (20.7 %) appeared with relatively higher infection rates than any other species identified. A significant difference in numbers of parasites was recognized between the regions as 8 species in Chonnam and 4 species in Kyonggi. The laboratory rats reared in stainless steel cage showed the higher infection rate than those in polycarbonate cage, with some exception in H spumosa and H nana. This study was undertaken to investigate the changes of enzyme activities resulted from low concentrated carbon monoxide poisoning on the caudate nucleus in rat. The activities of cytochrome oxidase, succinate dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase were observed histochemically, after the experimental animals were poisoned to 100 ppm carbon monoxide for 8 hours every day from one day to 16 days. The materials were sliced from coronal section at the level of the optic chiasm and immediately frozen sections of 10 micro m thickness were cut on the cryostat at -15deg C and incubated in the medium containing substrate for histochemical detection of cytochrome oxidase, succinate dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase. The sections were mounted in glycerol gelatin and observed under light microscope. It was obtained that cytochrome oxidase activity decreased moderately and succinate dehydrogenase activity showed marked or moderate activity during entire poisoning period and lactate dehydrogenase activity showed marked or moderate activity from one to 8 days but recovered to normal condition at 16th day

These studies were carried out to investigate the changes of blood pictures, histological findings and testosterone concentrations after orchidectomy in ageing rat. The total W.B.C. counts were 9.27 +- 12 x 10** (3)/mm** (3) in the control group, 9.54 +- 34 x 10** (3)/mm** (3) in the sham-operation group and 12.08 +- 28 x 10** (3)/mm** (3) in the orchidectomy group when it was checked 50days after the operation. The number of lymphocytes after orchidectomy began to increase gradually as time passes, thereafter markedly increased 10.12 +- 03 x 10** (3)/mm** (3) at 50 days after orchidectomy. The concentration of testosterone in serum began to decrease gradually after orchidectomy showed lowest level 1.68 +- 0.61 pg/ml at 50 days after orchidectomy while it was 5.82 +- 0.39 pg/ml in control group. The histological findings of thymus after orchidectomy marked increase of thymic lymphocyte, disapearance of fat cells and appearance of mitotic figures

This study was designed in order to clarify the effect of ethanol drinking on the mineral contents on liver, kidney, muscle and hair. Forty-five rats were divided into 2 groups and a control group. The control group received tap water and the other 2 groups were given 8 % and 40 % ethanol as drinking source. Liver, kindney, muscle and hair samples were taken and analyzed for zinc, calcium and copper contents by atomic absorption spectrophotometric methods. The zinc content of muscle showed significant (P0.01) decrease in both groups. The calcium content of hair showed significant (P0.1) increase in 8 % ethanol group. The copper contents of kidney and muscle in 8 % ethanol group and liver in 40 % ethanol group showed significant (P0.1) decrease

The effects of red ginseng and raw ginseng were examined in vivo mid-term test for hepatocarcinogens in rats. The number of placental type of glutathione S-transferase (GST-P)-positive foci of the liver was significantly reduced in rats given diethylnitrosamine (DEN) followed by raw ginseng (4.77 +- 3.23, p0.05) as compared to the controls given carcinogen alone (9.07 +- 5.69). The area of GST-P positive foci was also significantly reduced in rats given DEN followed by red ginseng (0.5 +- 0.31, p0.05) as compared to the control (0.93 +- 0.65). These result suggest that red or raw ginseng are not hepatocarcinogens and rather may possess inhibitory potential for liver carcinogenesis

This study was undertaken to establish reliable diagnostic-procedures for the microbiological monitoring of laboratory animals. Murine (mice and rats) antibodies against hemagglutinating virus of Japan (HVJ), mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) and Mycoplasma pulmonis (Mp) were detected sensitively and specifically in experimentally and naturally infected animals' sera by an indirect enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA), using urease conjugated antimurine immunoglobulin. The sensitivity and specificity of the complement fixation test which has been apllied widely for serodiagnosis of HVJ, MHV and Mp infections were apparently lower than those of ELISA. From these results, the ELISA was found to be available for the serodiagnosis of HVJ, MHV and Mp infections in mice and rats
