The species composition and geographic distribution of ixodid ticks infesting domestic dogs owned by people in rural communities and villages in Maputo Province was established by collecting ticks from dogs at each of 27 localities spread throughout the province. Ticks were collected from a total of 132 dogs, and nine species belonging to four genera were identified. One dog was infested with six species, three with five and 13 with four species. Haemaphysalis elliptica followed by Rhipicephalus simus were present on dogs at most localities, and their geographic distribution in Maputo Province has been mapped for the first time.

Investigation of antibacterial and antifungal activity of phenolic extract of Haloxylon salicornicum was carried out in this study on Gram positive and Gram negative pathogenic bacteria and some species of fungi. The results exhibited variable susceptibilities of microorganisms for different concentration of phenolic extract. The activity of this extract was associated with high concentrations. Using plate method, phenolic extract of H. salicornicum had the highest effect and wide diameter of growth inhibition zone against Candida albicans and Klebsiella pneumonia, and it has no effect on growth of Asprigillus fumigatus and A.. terreus only when very high concentrations is used

Saleem Amin Hasso | Rahman Kadhum Muhsen
Haematological values of sixty normal dogs aged from 2 months to 2 years of both sexes were estimated. Red blood cells count (RBCs), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV). Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), total and differential leukocyte count, total plasma protein, plasma albumin, fibrinogen and globulins were determined using several laboratory techniques and equations. The results revealed that, all RBCs parameters decreased with age except Hb, MCH and MCHC. The latter two increased with age while Hb was unchanged. All other parameters increased significantly with age. There were no significant differences in all parameters between both sexes.

Seventy five white cheese, semi-white cheese and cream (25 samples of each )were randomly collected from different area in basrah city and were investigated for microbiological quality. In these samples, the numbers of microorganisms were found as follows:14.13x104 cfu/g ,16.46x103 cfu/g and 12.36x103 cfu/g for total mesophilic bacteria , 9.87 X102 cfu/g total Psychrotrophic bacteria of cream , 12.92 X103 cfu/g, 6.97X102 cfu/g and 6.13 X102 cfu/g staphylococcus aureus, 98.72 X103 cfu/g,10.55 X102 cfu/g and 6.54 X102 cfu/g coliform count , 21.77 X102 cfu/g , 6.47 X102 cfu/g and 6.40 X102 cfu/g Escherichia coli .Total Psychrotrophic bacteria were not detected in white cheese and semi-white cheese . Significant (p<0.05) variations were found between raw white cheese, semi-white cheese and cream whereas no Significant variations were found between semi-white cheese and cream for all microbial group. The microbiological findings showed the presence of high counts of microorganisms investigated and the poor hygienic quality

Nowfel H.Jassim
This study was performed to investigate the anti-nociceptive effect of aqueous extract of Zingiber officinale rhizomes by three animal models of pain (hot plate test , tail flick and formalin test. The results showed that the oral administration of aqueous extract of ginger caused (81%) increase in hot plate time,(100%)increase in tail flick time and (41%)decrease in number of licking and biting with respect to pre-administration number. While the rats that given apple vinegar only caused (79%)increase in hot plate time, (83%)increase in tail flick time and (47%)decrease in number of licking and biting with respect to pre-administration levels. When the ginger was mixed with vinegar, it showed only (85%)increase in hot plate test,(77%)increase in tail flick test and(63%)in formalin test.

Three preparations of dried oleander leaves were prepared. The first one was by extraction with hexane; the second by extraction with 70% ethanol while the third was suspended as a whole ground leaves in distilled water. Different concentration of each form was prepared and the range of lethal dose in mice had estimated by pilot studies. The acute toxicity study was carried out by determine the median lethal dose (LD50) after administration of each preparation using 5 subgroups (10 mice) each receive dose range from 60-64 mg/kg, 504-536 mg/kg and 1100-1300 mg/kg for the hexane extract , ethanol extract and leave suspension respectively. The lethal dose calculated by employing probit method and found to be; 62.6 mg/kg for hexane extract, 521.0 mg/kg for ethanol extract and 1164.8 for leave suspension. This result indicates that the toxic constituents of the leaves are mostly non-polar, also that the potency of toxicity is far less than that mention in some literature.

The activity of water and ethanol extracts of Ruta graveolens and Cuminum and the essentioal oils of the groups A and H were evaluated on the termites workers of Microcerotermis gabriles in the laboratory with different concentrations. Result showed that ethanol extracts of R.graveolens , C. cyminum were the most effective in mortality significant differences from other extracts in filter paper treatment which cause 71.6%, 73% respectively in concentration 10% in 24 hour and increase to 100% after 72 hour of treatment Direct method contact showed that powder of C. cyminum was the most effective in mortality with rates 66.6 % for period 10 minutes and increase to 100% after 72 hour of the same period. All tested plants extracts was repellent to termites and the essential oil of C. cyminum was the effective once.

Out of one hundreds heads of cattle slaughtered in Dohuk abattoir of Iraq – Kurdistan region , Sarcocystosis showed to be occur in percentage of 81 – 96 % for microscopic cysts( microcysts ) of Sarcocystis spp. of cattle by several diagnostic techniques ( gross examination , trichinoscopy , squeezing method and post trichinoscopy drop examination ) which are varies in their efficiency depending on organ and the parasitic stage that can be detected by the used technique . The seasonal effect showed to be not effect in the distribution of the infection and that very important in the epidemiology of the disease as occur through statistical analysis.
