This paper describes the slaughter check results of breeding pigs from the Korean Swine Testing Station for the control of endemic diseases. Gross lesions monitored in the present study included those conditions commonly associated with economically significant subclinical herd infections enzootic pneumonia, pleuropnemonia, pleuritis, atrophic rhinitis, liver white spots, papular dermatitis and ileitis. A total of 128 slaughter pigs were investigated at 4 subsequent tests according to the slaughter check procedures established.

A 3-month-old, 2.8 kg, female Cocker spaniel was presented with chronic history of dysphagia since weaning. Video fluoroscopic examination revealed swallowing problems in the upper esophageal sphincters. It was diagnosed as cricopharyngeal achalasia. Cricopharyngeal and thyropharyngeal myectomy was performed. One day after surgical management, normal swallowing movement was observed in the video fluoroscopic examination of the dog. There was no evidence of recurrence for 15 months.

This case was found in Holstein cow suffering from dystocia. The twin calves in uterus were dead and removed by fetotomy. Gross anatomical analysis of thoracopagus siamese calf was carried out. Two normal heads were present on two necks, however, the twins were fused in the thoracic region. There were four forelimbs and an abnormal orientation of ribs. Two separate vertebral columns along the length of the animal ended with two tails. A single pericardium lay on the midline when opening the thorax.

A 7-month-old female Shih-tzu dog was presented with intermittent trembling, dyspnea, generalized muscle weakness, and unconsciousness after exercise. No remarkable findings were shown in the complete blood counts and the radiographic examination. On serum biochemical profiles, alkaline phosphatase and creatine phosphokinase were mildly elevated. Based on history takings, physical examination, and neurological findings, presumptive diagnosis was made as a myasthenia gravis (MG).

A 7-year-old, female ponter dog was referred to the SNU Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital for the evaluation of lameness in the pelvic limb of 10 days' duration. After the treatment for 2 weeks (carprofen 2.2 mg/kg, bid), the progressive, symmetric, ambulatory caudal paraparesis was profound. In the spinal myelography, left lateral extradural compression of the spinal cord over the ninth and tenth thoracic vertebral bodies was found. A left hemilaminectomy of the ninth and tenth thoracic vertebrae was done.

We established an in vitro experimental system using the following procedure. We first introduced tritium-labeled norepinephrine ([³H]-NE) into PC12 cells. The [³H]-NE incorporated into PC12 cells were then stimulated by a high concentration (60 mM) of K+ buffer during 12 minutes. Then, we collected 100 μl supernatant and counted the amount of [³H]-NE release from PC12 cells with a scintillation counter. After screening fungal, Streptomyces spp. or bacterial product using this experimental sytem, we obtained FS11052 from Streptomyces spp. which inhibited [³H]-NE release from PC12 cells.

Shiga toxin (stx) producing Escherichia coli (STEC) causes various clinical signs in animal and himan. In this study, 255 fecal samples from samples from calves showing diarrhea were collected from cattle farms in Chonnam province during the period from January 2005 to July 2005. Twenty six STEC (10%) were isolated from 255 fecal samples by PCR. The isolates displayed three different stx combinations (stx1[69%], stx1 and stx2 [15%], and stx2 [38%]). The isolates were further studied for virulence associated genes and antimicrobial resistance to define the virulence properties.

To determine the effects of β-carotene on the control of mastitis in dairy cows during the dry period, 38 dairy cows (18 mastitic cows and 20 healthy cows) were administered with 5ml of β-carotene (30 mg/ml) intramuscularly twice (4 week intervals). Blood samples were taken from the cows before the injection and two weeks after the second injection, respectively, and were measured for the cows before the lymphocyte subpopulations and lymphocyte proliferation responses.

A 6-year-old female Jindo dog weighing 20 kg was presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University for the formation of crust and erosion of the nasal bridge and planum, and for alopecia of ear margin. Erythema, crusts, alopecia and erosions were present in the nasal planum and the bridge of the nose on physical examination. There were no abnormalities on CBC, serum chemistry, and basic dermatologic examination which included skin scraping, bacterial cultures, and fungal cultures.

Objective-To determine gene expression of selected molecular markers (tumor necrosis factor TNF-alpha, interleukin IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, procalcitonin PCT, and transforming growth factor TGF-beta) in the blood of healthy and sick foals. Animals-28 sick foals without sepsis, 21 foals with sepsis, and 21 healthy foals. Procedures-Total RNA was extracted from blood samples and converted into complementary DNA (cDNA). Gene expression was measured for the molecular markers by use of real-time PCR assay, and final quantitation was performed with the comparative threshold cycle method. Results-Samples from all foals yielded transcription for all markers. Expression of TNF-alpha and TGF-beta was significantly lower and that of IL-8 significantly greater in the sick-nonseptic and septic groups, compared with the healthy group. No significant difference in expression of IL-1beta, IL-6, and PCT was found between the healthy group and the 2 sick groups. Expression of IL-10 was significantly greater in nonsurvivors, compared with survivors. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-The cytokine profile in foals with sepsis may suggest an immunosuppressive state. Expression of IL-10 may be a marker for identification of foals with a guarded prognosis.
