| The validty of a systematic laboratory exam that consists in examining the nervous system of a canine population sample in a given area was anlyzed, as a proper strategy for epidemiological survilance of the rabies virus presence. The analysis was based on the databank of the County of Mogi-Guaçu, SP, Brazil, referring to the historical period between January 1989 and december 1999. During this period 1,167 animals were examined and an immunofluorescence test applied to rabies showed that 130 animals (11.2%) were positive. The sample size for detecting at least one positive animal was calculated by using the formula n = {1-(1-±)1/d } (N - d/2} + 1. Between 1989 and 1994 the size of sample was calculated based on the real number of recorded cases. Between 1995 and 1999, as there were no new cases of canine rabies, the analysis considered a hypothetical presence of a confirmed case. It was also carried out a simulation of the number of rabies cases that should occur so that the sample effectively used by the Rabies Control Service would be able to reveal the presence of at least one positive animal. Results showed that in the period from 1989 to 1994, in when the annual frequecy of canine rabies cases varied from 5 to 75 cases, the ideal size of sample should be from 12,400 to 12,922. In the period from 1995 to 1999, when no canine rabies cases were recorded, the sample size would be from 13,257 to 14,698 if at least one case occurred. Thus, one can understand that in therms of probability, the proposed strategy is not recommended for the epidemiological survilance of rabies virus presence, since the number of animal to be examined is not feasible in real situation.

| The effect of high environmental temperature on animals has been extensively studied in order to search the ideal housing and better performance both productive and reproductive. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of the evaporative cooling system associated to controlled ventilation (SRAVC) used in gestating sow's housing on their reproductive parameters response. Two systems were evaluated: SRAVC and natural ventilation (Natural). A total of 144 Dalland® sows were used during two seasons, summer and winter, resulting in 4 treatments (33 sows each) such as: the use of evaporative cooling associated to controlled ventilation during summer (SRAVC/summer), natural ventilation during summer (Natural/summer), evaporative cooling associated to controlled ventilation during winter (SRAVCwinter) and natural ventilation during winter (Natural/winter). The SRAVC system control was adjusted by thermostat, and the ventilation started when the ambient temperature reached 25ºC, and fogging at 27ºC, keeping it on for five minutes and then turning it off for the next twenty minutes. The following reproductive parameters were evaluated: number of piglets born alive (NV); mortality of embryo (MF), mortality at birth (NM), weight at birth (PN), number weaned piglet (NLD), weaned piglet's weight (PD), and piglet's weight gain (GP). The forced ventilation system decreased the embryo mortality, but the only the season influenced the final weight of weaned piglets.

The present study was carried out to compare the productive and reproductive aspects of Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis virus (CAEv) antibody-positive and antibody-negative dairy goats. The agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID) was performed, using the following antigens from the CAEv: gp135, a glicoprotein and p28, an internal structural protein. A goat herd coming from the contry of São Paulo state was evaluated for 24 months. Three serum tests were performed with intervals of 12 months. The frequency of occurrence of CAE, obtained for the three different moments of observation was 60,1%, 74,1%, 70,5%, respectively, and the total rate was 68.3% (566/829). The percentage of reagents to the CAEv rose significantly as the age grew. The average lactation length (in days) was lower for positive goats, significant values were found for goats of 24 to 36 months and for 36 to 48 months ones. The CAEv antibody-positive goats presented a mean daily milk yield (kg./day) lower than CAEv antibody-positive goats, with significant values for the groups: 12 to 24 months and 48 months or more. The total production for lactation was 21.5% lower for positive goats. The CAE did not influenced the reproductive aspects in this study on first kidding and on kidding interval. However, the average of kidding age was bigger between the reagents, when compared with not reagents, being statistically significant. Also the weight of kids, born from positive goats with age of 48 months or higher, was lower than that of the ones born from negative mothers.

Radiographic Optic Densitometry was used to measure bone mineral content by radiographic images. This method contributes to the diagnosis of osteopenia, preventive estrategies associated to bone metabolism and monitoring of series of measurement of density to accompany pathologies, surgeries, therapies and. The optic density was measured by the image processing software, ImageLab; the applicability of this method was tested and canine reference values of bone mineral density (BMD) were compared to a standard aluminium scale radiographed with the bone. Correlations between the BMD values and the variables weigth, age, sex and width and thickness of the distal third of the 112 Poodles´s right radius-ulna were studied. It was observed that diaphysary BMD values were higher than metaphysary BMD values due to the differences between cancelous and compact bones. However, these differences in the BMD values were not observed in the younger group, up to about one year of age, probably due to the higher bone metabolism during the growing period in the metaphysary region. The average BMD values for each weight category showed that the best method to establish reference values was by weight and bone region. Average values of metaphysary region (M) and diaphysaries 1 (D1) and 2 (D2) were established in three different weight categories. For dogs up to 2.5kg in weight these values were BMD-M=2.55±0.30, BMD-D1=2.89±0.40 and BMD-D2=3.16±0.43mmAl; for dogs from 2.6 up to 5.0kg these values were BMD-M=3.16±0.43, BMD-D1=3.67±0.47 and BMD-D2=3.96±0.55mmAl and for dogs from 5.1 up to 7.5kg these values were BMD-M=3.72±0.50, BMD-D1=4.31±0.52 and BMD-D2=4.60±0.62mmAl.

In NK cell-depleted mice, the NK cytotoxic activity of spleen cells decreased at 7 days after infection and more parasites were found in the lesion. The NK cell populations were analyzed by immunohistochemistry in spleen cryosections. An increase of NK1.1+ expression and a decrease of NK5E6+ antigen expression was observed in NK cell-depleted mice compared to non-depleted mice. When the presence of IFN-g, IL-12 and IL-4 at the site of parasite inoculation was analyzed by immunohistochemistry, a large amount of cytokines was detected in K cell-depleted mice at 24 hours and 7 days after infection. In non-depleted mice, there was a small amount of IL-12 at 24 hours and of IL-4 at 7 days after infection. These data cells suggest that K cell depletion by 90Srresults in increased parasitism in the lesion. The increase of NK1.1+ expression, which mainly produces IL-4, may take part in the progression of the infection.</span></p> <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> células Natural IVller (NK) foram infectados subcutaneamente com 107 promastigotas de Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis em fase estacionária de crescimento e amostras foram colhidas às 24 horas e 7 dias de infecção. It was analysed the uterine tube structure in Agouti. We have used three adult females, caming from Wild Animals Preservation and Study Nucleous of "Universidade Federal do Piauí". Soon after anaesthesia and euthanasia we got collected uterine tube fragments from cranial, medial and caudal regions. The cuts of 3 to 5m were stained with HE, and analysed and photographed with a light microscope. We could observed that the uterine tubes have three distincts stratums: mucous membrane, muscular and serous with histologicals differences that characterize the infundibulum, ampulla and isthmus regions. The uterine tube light is irregular, on cranial and medium portions. It is bigger and irregular than caudal portion. The mucous membrane is coat with simple columnar epithelium with ciliar and nonciliar cells. The own lamina, formed of slack conjunctive tissue, without glands, on ampulla region, become small and we can observe many cells. On isthmus mucous we observe ephithelial tissue with low cells. The muscular, constituted of smooth fibres, that is observed like a circular and longitudinal stratum, and the serous stratum full of vessels. Histologically, the uterine tube in Agouti is similar to the others domestic and wild animals.

Renal biopsy is a useful diagnostic technique for the identification to the type of lesion, severity of the disease and its evolution. The high incidence of renal lesions in horses, which usually are a consequence of digestive and respiratory diseases and are frequently associated with endotoxemia, prompted us to study the laparoscopic technique for renal biopsy compair the use of needle and forceps. For the purpose of this study ten helthy horses were randomly chosen and divided into two grups of five animals each: in one group laparoscopic guided renal biops was performed using tru-cut needles and in the other group using 5mm laparoscopic forceps. Procedures were carried out with the animals in standing position. Animals were given a sedative analgesic combination and local anesthetic was infiltrated in two specific points on the left flank. One point was used to introduce the trocar and laparoscopic, the other was used to introduce the forceps or the needle. The techniques were compared as regards safety, intensity of bleeding, time for execution and significance of the sample obtained. In all of the procedures, were possible to inspect the abdominal cavity, and chose the place to collect samples, without acidents or complications. The histological analysis of the sample showed a higher percentage of adequate biopsies in the group where laparoscopic forceps were used that permit us to viable both of them with preference for the forcps use.

The objective of theis research was to analyze the skin of goats, identifying the structural differences in the cell level. It was used 16 animals, males, crossbred Alpine, using 4 animals in each slaughter, at the age of 180 days and older, used intervals of 45 days between each slaughter. After flaying the animals, it was removed samples of the skin from dorsal, palette, ventral, hind and lateral regions. These samples were placed in a Bouin solution an analyzed at cellular level, according to the paraffin inclusion routine. The 5 mm cuts were photomicrographed and analyzed. The goats skin that were 180 days old shown a thicker thermostatic layer of the skin, consequently with a greater density of follicles and glands. With age the reticular layer develops leading to the sheaves of fibers of the collagen.

Liposarcus anisitsi is a freshwater teleost from Siluriform order with external fertilization that shows cystic spermatogenesis process with spermatogonial unrestricted lobular structure of the testes. In this species, isolated or intracystic primary spermatogonia were noted as the ¨stem cells¨ of the spermatogenetic lineage. Thus, as consequence of the cystic spermatogenesis process of Liposarcus anisitsi all the three germinative cells are observed inside specific spermatogenetic cysts, since the primary and secondary spermatogonias until the spermatocytes and early and late spermatids. Spermatogonia show spherical shape with central nuclei and great amount of round mitochondria and ER profiles mainly of rough type in their cytoplasm. Primary spermatocytes have inter-relations through cytoplasmic bridges and are clearly identified by presence of synaptonemic complexes inside the nuclei. Early spermatids beginning maturational phases, as well as the late spermatids, tend to exhibit spherical nuclei, variable chromatin pattern with progressive condensation during the end steps of the spermiogenesis. In this end steps, the late spermatids show the nuclear fossa formed to the fixation of the flagella. The spermatozoon of Liposarcus anisitsi shows round head, round nuclei, very dense chromatin, lack of acrosoma, short middle piece and long tail (principal and end pieces of the flagellum).
