| It was aimed with this research to evaluate the performance of broiler chickens fed diets containing increasing levels of acerola meal in replacement of corn and analyze the economic viability of that production system. A total of 980 day-old male Cobb chicks were used, allotted in a completely randomized design, with four treatments - inclusion levels (0%, 5%, 10% and 15%) of acerola meal in replacement of corn – and seven replications with 35 birds per experimental unit. The birds were weighed at 21 and 42 days of age to measure the performance data. In the period between 1 and 21 days of age, differences were observed in the feed intake and feed:gain only, in which the inclusion of acerola meal linearly decreased feed intake and improved feed:gain up to a level of 10.25%. For the total rearing period, the control treatment showed higher body weight. The feed:gain showed linear effect, worsening the results with increasing amounts of acerola meal in the diets. In the same period, there was no significant difference in feed intake and productive efficiency index. With regard to the economic analysis, it was found that the lowest final cost per broiler was observed in diets with 10% of acerola meal inclusion in replacement of corn.

| Tumors of the mammary glands are the most common neoplasms in dogs in our country; however, there are few Brazilian reports dedicated to clinicopathological and survival studies about this disease. This report aims the clinical and pathological study of canine mammary tumors in the Santos Metropolitan Region, an area in Sao Paulo state with an estimated canine population of 120,000 animals. Data of 14,298 dogs were collected retrospectively from the medical records of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of the Metropolitan University of Santos – São Paulo – Brazil. During the study period, from records of 317 females with histopathological diagnosis of neoplasia, 170 were mammary epithelial lesions distributed in 13 benign tumors, 152 malignant (89.4% of diagnosis) and 5 non-neoplasic epithelial lesions (ductal hyperplasia). The highest prevalent malignant tumor was tubular carcinoma (38.2% of diagnosis) and Grade I tumors, corresponding to 73.0% of all diagnosis. The results have shown clinical staging of canine mammary neoplasms as an important prognostic survival factor and, in a multivariate analysis, tumor diameter, tumor grade, adjuvant chemotherapy and recurrence as covariates with predictive value for survival. Moreover, the high prevalence of tubular carcinoma qualifies the canine population ofSantosas a promising model for the translational study of this disease.

| This work aimed to evaluate the influence of EGF on canine oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM). We carried out the transport of the ovaries in sodium chloride 0.9% solution, which were cut into phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and the cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) selected in tissue culture medium (TCM), supplemented with 199 HEPES. A total of 405 grade 1 oocytes were collected from bitches in anestrus and diestrus. Oocytes from the two phases of estrous cycle were subjected to two treatments: medium with addition of 10 ηg/mL epidermal growth factor (EGF) (T) and medium without supplementation (C). After 72 h of maturation, COCs were denuded, fixed and stained with Hoechst 33342 to assess nuclear maturation. The oocytes obtained from the ovaries of the diestrus phase of the T group demonstrated higher percentage (18.8%) of oocytes at metaphase II stage (M-II) than C group (1.3%) (p < 0.01). The oocytes from anestrus phase demonstrated difference (p < 0.05) between the groups, observing smaller proportion (4.1%) of oocytes at the stage of germinal vesicle (GV) in group T compared to group C (16.1%). Comparing the different reproductive status in media supplemented with EGF difference (p < 0.05) was observed only in oocytes diestrus phase relative to the stage of M-II. Thus, supplementation on maturation medium at a concentration of 10 ηg/mL of EGF in this study had positive influence only on IVM of canine oocytes obtained from diestrus phase, increasing the levels of M-II in this species.

| Current research studied, by dissection, the origin and distribution of the ischiatic nerve in 30 fetuses of mixed-breed male or female sheep (Ovis aries), obtained from abortions, stillborns and natural deaths of pregnant females on farms in the Triângulo Mineiro region, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Formaldehyde 10% was injected through the cannulation of descending thoracic aorta and the material was kept immersed in the solution for at least 48 hours before dissection. The ischiatic nerve originated from the ventral branch of the last lumbar spinal nerve, either from the sixth lumbar spinal nerve (L6) or from the seventh (L7), when present, and from the ventral branches of first and second sacral spinalnerves (S1 and S2, respectively), and possibly from the ventral branch of third sacral spinal nerve (S3). The ischiatic nerve provided branches to the superficial gluteal, middle gluteal, accessory gluteal, deep gluteal, gemelli, quadratus femoris, adductor, biceps femoris, semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscles. The tibial and common peroneal nerves were the terminal branches of the ischiatic nerve, originating distally towards the greater trochanter of the femur bone. Wilcoxon’s test (0.05) showed that statistically there were no significant differences between the frequencies of the muscular branches of the ischiatic nerve and the antimeres, regardless of the number of muscular branches.

| The purpose of this study was to analyze the usefulness of PCR for the detection of leptospiral carriers in sheep under tropical field conditions. Two flocks, previously reported as seroreactive (A) and seronegative (B), were selected for this study. Serology confirmed the previous status of the two flocks. Culture was negative for all the samples. In PCR, animals of Flock A presented 26.7% (VF), 33.3% (semen) and 38.9% (urine) of positivity. Flock B presented 40.0% (VF), 33.3% (semen) and 5.6% (urine) of positivity by PCR. In conclusion, PCR was important to identify carriers of leptospires, including animals from a seronegative flock, what reinforces the advantages of the usage of this tool for the detection of carriers in sheep as part of control programs of leptospirosis under tropical field conditions.

International audience | This study attempts to describe the bacterial nature and sensitivities of aerobic cultures from nasolacrimal duct (NLD) flushes in both healthy and clinically ill rabbits presenting nasal and ocular discharge to help effective treatment. The records of 83 pet rabbits presenting clinical signs (Clinical Signs Group: CSG) and of 20 control pet rabbits with no clinical signs (NCSG : Non Clinical Signs Group) were evaluated. The percentage of culture yielding no bacteria in control healthy rabbits group (25.9% of records) and in the group of rabbits with clinical signs (30% of records) is higher than expected in that the NLD environment is not sterile. Numerous bacterial organisms were isolated (26). The CSG didn’t show any different bacteria than those found in the NCSG. Organisms were categorized as to potential pathogenicity, and typical site of isolation in four categories: Pasteurella species, common bacteria of the GI tract, bacteria usually present on skin and mucosa and ubiquitous bacterias from the environment. The commensal GI tract bacteria could have colonized the NLD or may have been collected, while the fluid was passing from the nares over the upper lips, since rabbits ingest their cecotrophs. Ubiquitous bacteria could have been present in the NLD, but could also probably be present on the skin or come from an external contamination during sampling. Among the CSG, Pasteurella multocida was the most commonly isolated microorganism (34.8% of the total number of bacterial isolates), with a significant difference in juvenile rabbits. There was no significant difference between the percentage of Pasteurella multocida cultured in the NCSG and in the CSG. Enterobacter cloacae (10.1%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (8.7%) were consistent findings that can behave as opportunistic pathogens of clinical relevance. There was no significant difference in percentage of the four different bacterial categories among the groups showing various clinical signs. The sensitivity tests were consistent with the typical sensitivities of the bacteria that were isolated. Based on the majority of organisms cultured in the present study and their sensitivity panels, empiric choices of antibiotics include sulfonamides or quinolones.

The current study was conducted to evaluate the pathogenicity and immunosuppressive effects of GM-97 strain of infectious bursal disease virus in commercial broiler chickens. A total of 500 broiler chickens were vaccinated with the virus through oral route at 10 and 17 days of age (102-103 EID50/dose). Chickens were also vaccinated with Newcastle disease virus (Hitchner B1) orally at 14 and 21 days old. Chickens were euthanized (at 12, 14, 16, 20, 23, 26 days of age) after measuring body weight. Bursa of Fabricius was examined for any gross lesion, weighed and processed for histological investigations. Bursa to body weight ratio and bursal lesion scoring were made to evaluate pathogenicity of the virus. Blood samples were analyzed for antibody response to ND vaccine virus using HI test. Results showed that the GM-97 strain of IBDV induced mild to moderate depletion of lymphoid cells in the center of bursal follicles and non-significant difference in bursa to body weight ratio amongst vaccinated and unvacci-nated chickens. Chickens responded well to ND vaccine by mounting high level of serum NDV specific HI antibody titers. It can be concluded from the present study that GM-97 strain of IBDV has mild pathogenicity but is not immunosuppressive. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5455/javar.v1i1p1-7 J. Adv. Vet. Anim. The current work was carried out to investigate the gross and microanatomical features of moderator bands (septomarginal trabecula) in camel heart. Ten hearts were collected from healthy mature dromedary camels. Anatomically, the moderator bands were present in both right and left ventricles. In right ventricle, the walls had one muscular moderator band which was extended from the interventricular septum to the opposite ventricular wall especially to the papillary muscle. In left ventricle, there were two bands; one extended from the interventricular septum to the papillary muscles, and the other one was present in various places especially in the apex running as a thin thread-like band across the left ventricular wall. Histological examination revealed that the moderator band consisted of two major layers; the central (core) myocardium and the peripheral endocardium, acting as band capsule. The myocardium had two bundles; the contractile cardiac muscle bundles and the Purkinje fiber bundles. The endocardium consisted of three layers; the endothelial layer of simple squamous epithelium, the subendothelial layer of loose connective tissue and the subendocardial layer, connecting the endocardium with the myocardium.
