The first outbreak of aujeszky's disease (AD) was identified from piggery located at the southern part of Korea in July, 1987. This piggery suffered from a significant economic loss caused by unexpected piglet mortality and reproductive failure. Etiologic viral agents were isolated from tonsil and spleen of the infected piglets, and the isolates produced a typical cytopathic effect of herpesvirus with giant cell formation when inoculated in many different cells. Subsequently the field isolates were characterized as suid herpesvirus I by cross-neutralization test and indirect fluorescence assay utilizing specific monoclonal antibody, and proved to be a pathogenic strain of AD virus(ADV).

Mating experiments were performed to elucidate the distribution of perfect state of Microsporum gypseum complex originating from animals and soils in Korea. A total of 30 strains of M. gypseum complex, composed of 16 from animals and 14 from soils, mated with the tester strains of Nannizzia incurvata, N. gypsea and N. fulva. Among 30 strains of M. gypseum complex examined, 16 strains (53.3%) were N. incurvata, 13 strains (43.3%) N. gypsea and 1 strain (3.3%) N. fulva. Among 13 strains of dog isolates, 8 strains (61.5%) were N. incurvata and 5 strains (38.5%) N. gypsea. And each strain isolated from Korean native goat, monkey and albino rat was N. gypsea. Among 14 strains of soil isolates, 8 strains (57.2%) were N. incurvata, 5 strains (35.7%) N. gypsea and 1 strain (7.2%) N. fulva. And - mating type was more frequently obseved than + mating type in the strains of N. incurvata and N. gypsea. By this study, N. fulva was isolated the first time in Korea.

1985
Yang I.S. | Sung H.K.
The changes of acid-base status in vitro of the venous blood for 24 hrs in ten Korean native goats were investigated. The acid-base parameters were measured within ten minutes after collection of the blood, and every hour during the first six hours and finally after twenty-four hours of storage. Blood samples were stored at two different temperatures (0-4 deg C and 21-24 deg C). Twelve goats were induced acute acid-base disturbances by intravenous infusion of either hydrochloric acid or sodium bicarbonate and inhalated with CO2 gas mixture (20% C02, 80% O2) or hyperventilation were performed by means of respirator.

Mycoflora in broiler houses.
1984
Choi W.P. | Yeo S.G. | Lee H.J.
The present survey was undertaken to determine the mycoflora of broiler houses. Attempts were made to isolate and identify fungi in the dust, feed, litter and water from 21 broiler houses. A total of 166 isolates of fungi was identified as yeast spp. (44%), Aspergillus spp. (30.7%), Verticillium spp. (7.2%), Penicillium spp. (3.6%), Paecilomyces spp. (3.6%), Scopulariopsis spp. (3.0%), Cephalosporium spp. (3.0%), Chrysosporium spp. (2.4%), Cladosporium spp. (1.8%) and Absidia spp. (0.6%).

This study was carried out to observe the histological changes of the parenchymal organs of the rats, rabbits and dogs intramuscularly injected with Rompun. There were severe hyperemia of spleen, hyperemia and extension of the central vein of the liver, centrilobular degeneration of liver, hyperemia and hemorrhage of the kidney, necrosis and hydropic degeneration of renal tubule, hyperemia of pulmonary alveolar septa and pulmonary edema, and in the cases injected with Rompun and histamine or pentothal sodium at the same time, the microscopical findings described above were more conspicuous than the cases injected with Rompun alone.
